A gift card is a prepaid card that is loaded with a specific amount of money and can be used as an alternative to cash for purchasing goods or services from a particular retailer, brand, or group of businesses. Gift cards are typically issued by retailers or businesses and can be purchased by customers to give as gifts or personal use.
Gift cards come in two main types:
1. Closed-loop Gift Cards: These gift cards are typically issued by a specific retailer or brand and can only be redeemed at their stores or locations. For example, a closed-loop gift card from a clothing store can only be used for purchases at that specific store.
2. Open-loop Gift Cards: These gift cards carry the logo of a major credit card company, such as Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. They can be used at any merchant that accepts the respective credit card network, providing more flexibility in terms of where they can be redeemed.
Gift cards usually have a magnetic stripe or a barcode that holds the card's value information. When making a purchase, the recipient presents the gift card to the cashier, who scans or swipes it to deduct the amount spent from the card's balance. Some gift cards also have PIN codes for additional security.
