The genius behind the Nike Swoosh!

The Nike Swoosh is one of the most recognizable brand logos in the world and the genius behind it is Carolyn Davidson. She designed the simple logo in 1971, while she was still a graphic design student at Portland State University. The only advice she received was to create a striped design that was supportive of the shoe.

She was paid $2/hour for her work, for a grand total of only $35. However, her extraordinary work did not go unappreciated since in 1983, in recognition of her contribution to the company, Nike gave her a diamond Swoosh ring and a few hundred shares of stock for her work (now worth more than $600K).

Carolyn’s design strategy:

Davidson needed to find something that was different from competitors’ logos, like the recognized Adidas striped logo. She needed to create a logo that was original and conveyed movement and motion.

She sketched potential logos by hand on tissue paper and laid them out over a drawing of a shoe to see what the logo would look like on the finished product. She presented several designs to Nike and they eventually settled on her favorite design, the swoosh. Phil Knight, the founder of Nike, originally said of the logo: “Well, I don’t love it, but maybe it will grow on me.”

The logo has helped to create a global brand that is now worth approximately $67 billion.

Moral of the story:

Always try to do your best, with whatever resources you have. You will be surprised by the results.

4 Crucial Tips for Designers, Artists and Creative Thinkers.

There are many courses, video tutorials, books and advice out there for designers and creative thinkers. However, it is difficult to know where to start, what to see or read and whom to follow. Hence, Yellow Raptor has summarised four crucial tips from one of our favourite books “Things Are What You Make of Them: Life Advice for Creatives” by Adam J. Kurtz.

1. Know your truth

All modern artists and designers have the same tools at their disposal such as the Adobe Suite, Affinity, Procreate, Canva, etc. They also have the opportunity to develop similar skills, so what will set you apart from them?

Your truth! Know your truth, understand what makes you who you are. There is a high possibility that you have been taken far away from this truth by society, so bring yourself back. Understand your emotions and give yourself the opportunity to be who you truly are. Understand how you experience things and bring those teachings into your design to help others experience it.

2. Do it yourself and see how it goes

The process of creativity is magical but it is not magic. You do not need to have superpowers to be creative because we are all born with it. Sometimes due to lack of practice or societal and environmental pressures, you may forget your creativity, but you cannot lose it.

So stop believing that you are not creative and do not let others dictate your creativity! Try it out yourself today. Tap into your creative energy and make something special.

3. Be genuinely interested and excited

Be genuinely interested and excited about the things that you love, manifest it and you will see how it transforms your life. As a designer, whenever you come across opportunities, be genuinely interested and excited about it. This is because you never know how an interaction can snowball into your next big project.

4. It's ok to make things and be paid for them

Never feel guilty for charging a fee or asking for payment for your services, even if it is for a loved one. You have created something, you have given it your time, effort and skills therefore, you have the right to be rewarded. Moreover, do not undervalue your work because by undervaluing your work you end up undermining your worth!

Get Inspired!

Chip Kidd, a creative designer based in New York, is best known for his stunning book jackets – most notably for seminal publishing house Alfred A. Knopf. Kidd has also worked for writers such as James Elroy, Michael Crichton, and Neil Gaiman, among many others.

He encourages designers to collect labels, packaging, posters, and other graphic design samples that they find interesting. He suggests looking at all types of designs you like and asking yourself: Why did the designer make the decisions she did? What could have been better? What should you try to do in your own work?

Lesson from Paula Scher, The Titan of Postmodern Design-

“Your career is like a staircase."

During your 20s, the steps are steep, but not very deep. You are learning a great deal and climbing higher and higher, but you don't seem to get very far because you're still soaking everything up.

As you reach your 30s, you have achieved some professional status, which gives you some satisfaction and confidence. Your skills have finally been recognized, but there's a lot left to learn. Hence, the stairs are still quite high, but getting deeper.

In your 40s, the height of the stairs starts to shrink. As you have become an expert, you're learning less, but refining your craft. At this level, you are also competing with those younger designers still in their 30s for the same jobs.

You're growing less as you reach your 50s, but that doesn't matter because you still have power. All of your clients are the same age as you, you might even have grown up with them and these people have the power to give you great projects. You may not be as innovative as you were when you were young, but you have acquired a lot of knowledge by now.

Eventually, when you hit your 60s, it’s really just your 50s extended until the end where you don’t know what’s going on any longer!
