Before superheroes conquered cinema screens, many of them lived between the pages of a comic book.
September 25 is National Comic Book Day, a celebration of the writers, artists and storytellers who turn illustrations, dialogue and imagination into entire worlds.
From superheroes and villains to fantasy, horror, romance, history and graphic novels, comics have grown far beyond the idea that they are simply books for children. They are a distinctive form of visual storytelling where images and words work together to move a story forward.
And sometimes, a few illustrated panels are enough to create characters people remember for generations.
So today, open an old favourite, discover a new graphic novel or simply remember the comic-book character that first made you believe anything was possible.
Who was your favourite comic-book character growing up?
