1.PepsiCo purchased full ownership over Israeli company SodaStream for 3.2 Billion dollar to support Israel against economic pressure. SodaStream CEO Daniel Birnbaum said the deal represents a victory over the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, which targets companies for their involvement in apartheid.[1]
2.PepsiCo-owned SodaStream has been on the boycott list of the BDS movement since 2011 for its direct role in the occupation and discrimination against Palestinians. In 2011, the SodaStream factory was in an illegal settlement called Maโale Adumim, built on the remains of seven Palestinian villages. This particular land theft is considered โthe largest single expropriation in the history of the Israeli occupation[2]
3. The SodaStream plant directly contributed to the economy and development of the settlement and in return, SodaStream enjoyed tax reductions from the Israeli government, low real estate prices, and lax labour laws.[3]
4. In 2015, SodaStream relocated its main factory to the Idan Industrial Zone in the Naqab (Negev) desert directly colluding in the ethnic cleansing of Bedouin Palestinian citizens. The factory is located beside Rahat, a planned township where Palestinian Bedouins have been forcibly evicted โagainst their will.โ This is part of a long-time Israeli policy since the 1950s to forcibly expel and dispossess Palestinian Bedouins from their land, traditional lifestyles, and ancestral practices.[4]
5. PepsiCo-owned Sodastream discriminates and exploits Palestinian workers through inhumane working conditions and enslavement. In an interview in May 2013, a Palestinian worker at SodaStream said: โI feel humiliated and I am also disgraced as a Palestinian ... We Palestinian workers in this factory always feel like we are enslaved.โ[5]
6. PepsiCo owns 50% of Israeli brand Sabra Hummus alongside Strauss Group. Sabra provided food packages and financial support for IDF's Golani Brigade which is notorious for their human rights violations and war crimes in Lebanon and Occupied Palestine. In 1982, soldiers of the Golani Brigade assisted the Lebanese Phalangist militias in massacring between 2000-3500 Palestinian refugees and Lebanese civilians in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camp.[6]
7. PepsiCo and Strauss group reached milestones of partnership profiting from each other in business for over 20 years.[7] In 2012, after PepsiCo and Strauss Group established the joint venture, Sabra, Its sales increased by 34.2 percent. Because of PepsiCo's partnership, net profit at Israeli food and drinks maker Strauss Group rose 14.5 percent in the third quarter of 2012.[8] The Israeli militaryโs Golani and Givati brigades receive support from the Strauss Group under their Adopt a Warrior Program, including care packages, books, games, sports, and recreational equipment for soldiers.The Givati Brigade was involved in the ground offensive against Palestinians in Gaza during the 2008-2009 Operation Cast Lead. As of 2024, the Strauss Group lists on its website many partnerships with Israeli organizations, including โFriends of IDF,โ which works directly with the Israeli military to distribute funds to soldiers.Strauss also served as part of the Association for the Wellbeing of Israelโs Soldiers, which provides donations to fund โwelfare activities for the benefit of the soldiers,โwho commit human rights violations against Palestinians. Strauss Group Chairwoman Ofra Strauss is also a board member of the HESEG Foundation for Lone Soldiers, an organization founded by Canadians which encourages foreigners to join the Israeli military.The HESEG Foundation offers financial incentives for โlone soldiersโ to enlist in the Israeli army by offering scholarships and grants to study in Israel.In conclusion, PepsiCo's partnership financially profits Strauss Group, which directly funds war criminal militaries.[9]
8. PepsiCo's most significant institutional shareholders are Vanguard Group and Blackrock. The Vanguard Group holds approximately 131.14 million shares of PepsiCo and is also a top shareholder in Elbit Systems, Israelโs largest weapons company. BlackRock holds approx. 110.17M million shares of PepsiCo and is also a top shareholder in Lockheed Martin, which produces fighter jets for the Israeli military and boasts of being โproud of the significant role it has fulfilled in the security of the State of Israel.โ BlackRock has invested over $33 billion in 58 companies that are directly or indirectly involved in Israelโs military occupation, settlement expansion, and siege of Gaza. BlackRock is the largest shareholder of Bank Hapoalim, Israelโs largest bank, which finances and benefits from the construction of settlements and the exploitation of natural resources in the occupied Palestinian territories.[10]
9. PepsiCo has established dozens of collaborations with Israeli startups in areas such as agro-tech, innovation in manufacturing, marketing, data, and other advanced technologies, which have been implemented throughout PepsiCoโs global production chain[11]
