Maple Leaf International School’s Debate Club will host the second edition of its inter-school debate tournament, MLIS ETHOS Season 2, from September 3 to 5, 2026.

Following the success of its first edition, the three-day event will feature a WSDC debate tournament alongside new segments, including Moot Court, Devil’s Advocacy, General Knowledge Quiz and Wall Magazine.

Organisers said the activities will give students opportunities to develop public speaking, research, critical thinking and communication skills while competing with students from different schools.

The event will also feature a Cultural Break Night on the second day, with a live performance by band Odd Signature.

Bangladesh secured their first Test victory over Australia on Australian soil with a commanding performance in Darwin. Australia were dismissed for 198, with Steve Smith making 71 and Hasan Mahmud taking a career-best 6-55.

Bangladesh responded with 426, gaining a 228-run lead. Tanzid Hasan made a historic maiden Test century, scoring 101 to become the first Bangladeshi to score a Test hundred in Australia. Najmul Hossain Shanto made 84, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 65.

Australia were then bowled out for 284, with Mehidy taking five wickets. Bangladesh needed only 57 runs and reached the target calmly to complete a landmark victory.

The Adamjee Cantonment Public School Science Club is set to bring back the ACPS National Science Carnival after a decade, with the 3rd ACPS National Science Carnival 2026 scheduled to take place from 3-5 September 2026 at Adamjee Cantonment Public School, Dhaka Cantonment.

The national-level science carnival will bring together students from schools across Bangladesh to compete, innovate and showcase their scientific knowledge and creativity through a wide range of competitions and activities.

The event aims to foster scientific curiosity, critical thinking and innovation among young minds while providing students with a platform to connect, learn and share their ideas.

After a 10-year hiatus, the return of the carnival marks a renewed effort to establish a larger platform for school-level science enthusiasts and celebrate the spirit of scientific exploration among the next generation.

Bangladesh’s LNG supply to the national gas grid rose to 810 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) on Friday, taking total gas supply to 2,425 mmcfd, the highest level since an interruption at Excelerate Energy’s floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) on 21 July.

Petrobangla data at 4pm showed Excelerate supplying 300 mmcfd and Summit 510 mmcfd. Domestic sources supplied 1,615 mmcfd.

Gas supply had fallen to 1,931.2 mmcfd on 13-14 August against demand of 3,854 mmcfd, contributing to shortages and pressure on power generation.

Petrobangla plans to raise gas allocation to power plants to as much as 960 mmcfd, from around 860 mmcfd at times, depending on availability.

Bangladesh’s two FSRUs can regasify about 1,100 mmcfd. Excelerate’s capacity is about 600 mmcfd and Summit’s 500 mmcfd. Excelerate’s current output remains below capacity.

Police detained a 37-year-old man from Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka on Saturday morning on suspicion of involvement with the banned Jubo League, police said.

The man, identified as Arnab Das from Tangail, was taken to Dhanmondi police station in a police vehicle and is being questioned, Officer-in-Charge Imdadul Islam Toyeb said.

Police said they would decide on further action after verifying his identity and background.

Security was tightened around Dhanmondi 32 from Friday night ahead of August 15, with police and armoured vehicles deployed in the area.

The area around the demolished residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman saw a heavy police presence, while journalists and members of the public gathered nearby.

August 15 marks the anniversary of the 1975 assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most members of his family.

Myanmar has verified more than 300,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh as former residents of Rakhine State and said it will receive them when security conditions improve, according to the Associated Press.

Myanmar’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday it had verified 426,545 people from a list of 828,824 refugees submitted by Bangladesh. Of those, 308,797 were identified as former Rakhine residents.

The ministry said 113,507 people could not be verified, while 4,241 were linked to what it described as terrorist activities.

More than 700,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh after Myanmar’s military crackdown in 2017, which drew international accusations of ethnic cleansing and genocide.

Repatriation efforts have repeatedly stalled over security concerns, while fighting between Myanmar’s military and the Arakan Army has further complicated returns.

Bangladesh marks 51 years since the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman today, with heightened security in Gopalganj ahead of 15 August.

In the early hours of Aug. 15, 1975, a group of mutinous army officers attacked Bangabandhu’s residence at Dhanmondi 32 and killed him and most of his family members. His wife Sheikh Fazilatunnessa Mujib, sons Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and 10-year-old Sheikh Russell, and other relatives were among those killed.

Bangabandhu’s nephew Sheikh Fazlul Haq Moni and his pregnant wife were also killed, while an attack on the home of his brother-in-law Abdur Rab Serniabat claimed several lives.

Only his daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, who were abroad at the time, survived.

Authorities have deployed five BGB platoons across Gopalganj, while police and intelligence agencies have intensified surveillance. Security has also been strengthened around the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Mausoleum Complex in Tungipara.

Officials said the district remained peaceful and law enforcement agencies would remain vigilant.

Authorities have tightened security across Gopalganj ahead of 15 August, deploying five platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) alongside police.

Additional officers have been stationed at key roads, intersections, government offices and public gathering places, while intelligence surveillance and round-the-clock patrols have increased.

Security has also been reinforced in Tungipara around the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Mausoleum Complex.

Deputy Commissioner Md Arif-Uz-Zaman said the BGB personnel would assist law enforcement agencies. Superintendent of Police Md Habibullah said the district had remained peaceful since 1 August and authorities hoped to maintain order.
