ChatGPT bought a podcast for over $100 million.
That sounds strange until you understand what OpenAI was actually buying.
TBPN is a daily technology talk show launched in October 2024.
It broadcasts for around three hours every weekday and has built an audience of roughly 70,000 viewers per episode across platforms.
On the surface, 70,000 viewers does not sound enormous for a company like OpenAI.
But audience size is not the whole story.
TBPN has become popular among Silicon Valley power players who view the show as more supportive of the technology industry than traditional news outlets.
Its guest list includes people like Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, and Sam Altman.
Founders, investors, operators, and technology executives are not just appearing on the show.
They are watching it.
The people actually building the future watch this show.
That is what makes the acquisition interesting.
OpenAI does not have a problem producing content.
AI can already generate articles, videos, images, podcasts, presentations, and almost anything else you can publish.
So OpenAI did not need another content team.
It did not need another podcast simply because it wanted more content.
It was buying something much harder to manufacture from scratch.
An existing audience.
Existing trust.
Existing relationships.
Existing access.
Existing distribution.
And TBPN had already turned that distribution into a real business.
The company reportedly generated around $5 million in advertising revenue last year and was on track to exceed $30 million in 2026 while remaining profitable.
But even those numbers are not the biggest takeaway.
The bigger lesson is what happens when AI makes content abundant.
When everyone can create articles, videos, podcasts, newsletters and media brands, the cost of producing content continues to fall.
That creates a new problem.
Everyone can produce.
So production becomes less valuable as a competitive advantage.
The bottleneck moves somewhere else.
Distribution.
And more importantly, trusted distribution.
Because having 1 million random followers is not necessarily more valuable than having 70,000 people who are founders, investors, operators, executives and decision makers in the industry you care about.
The value of an audience depends on who is inside it and how much they trust the person or company communicating with them.
That is why the important question is not simply:
How many people follow you?
It is:
Which people follow you?
And:
Do they trust you?
This is also why owned media is becoming a much more important business strategy.
A podcast is not just a podcast.
A YouTube channel is not just a YouTube channel.
A newsletter is not just a newsletter.
An Instagram show is not just an Instagram show.
Each can become a distribution asset that compounds attention, trust, relationships, demand and ultimately revenue.
Paid advertising rents attention.
You pay for impressions.
You stop spending and the distribution stops.
Owned media works differently.
You build an audience that you can continue reaching through a channel you control.
Over time, that audience can become a source of attention, trust, leads, partnerships, customers, talent and brand value.
That is the strategic difference.
And that is why the OpenAI and TBPN deal is bigger than a podcast acquisition.
It is a signal about where media and marketing are going.
AI is making the supply of content explode.
When supply becomes abundant, distribution becomes more valuable.
But even distribution is not enough.
The strongest asset is trusted distribution to the right people.
So the most interesting part of the OpenAI and TBPN deal is not really the podcast.
The podcast is the product.
The relationship underneath it is the asset.
And as AI continues to make content cheaper to produce, that relationship may become one of the most valuable things a company can own.
