Sustainable transformation in Bangladesh's RMG sector cannot be led from the outside. It has to be built from within.

In her latest knowledge piece, Nusrat Z Radia Shifat, Associate in the Industrial Productivity and Workers' Wellbeing Portfolio at Innovision Consulting, draws on her work under the Swisscontact-led PROGRESS project (Promoting Green Growth in the Ready-Made Garments Sector through Skills) to explore what it takes to build credible, locally grounded ESG capacity in the RMG sector.

From training 29 local ESG consultants to assessing 39 factories across four districts, the work revealed one consistent finding: awareness is the sector's most critical gap.

Global South economies are pivoting under pressure, and the signals are getting harder to ignore.

In J&J Fireside | Episode 3, macroeconomist Jyoti Rahman and Md. Rubaiyath Sarwar, Managing Director of Innovision Consulting, reflect on a year defined by disruption, adaptation, and shifting global power dynamics.

Originally featured on Counterpoint, this episode brings a year-in-review perspective from Dhaka and Australia, unpacking what 2025 revealed and what 2026 may demand.

From the ground and macro lens, they unpack:
• Shifting global policies, including tariffs and changes in development finance
• The growing tension between resilience and long-term growth
• Youth-led movements reshaping political landscapes
• The rise of South-South cooperation and regional realignment

At the center of the discussion is a core question: how do economies keep pivoting in uncertainty while still building stability and growth?

For Bangladesh, the conversation points to a bigger strategic shift, toward policy agility, stronger global positioning, and more resilient institutions in an increasingly unstable world.

💬 As the Global South continues to pivot, what matters more right now, speed of adaptation or strength of stability?

Climate shocks, livestock disease outbreaks, and unpredictable income losses continue to expose farming communities in Bangladesh to high financial vulnerability, while access to reliable risk protection mechanisms remains limited.

To address this challenge, Innovision Consulting is collaborating with the United Nations Development Programme - UNDP under the Financial Resilience in Agriculture (FRA) initiative to design climate-resilient and inclusive livestock insurance solutions for vulnerable farming communities.

As part of this initiative, Innovision Consulting, in partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Bangladesh (MoFL) and the Department of Livestock Services - DLS, conducted field visits and three Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with farmers in Rajshahi, Pabna, and Sirajganj from 25 April 2026 to 27 April 2026.

The field visit was attended by Dr. Mohammad Bazlur Rahman, Director, Planning Section, DLS, Dhaka; Md. Shoreful Haque, Deputy Director, Farm Section, DLS, Dhaka; and Dr. Muhammad Ahsan Habib, Animal Health Sector and District Livestock Officer, Lead, Deputation and Training Reserve Post, representing the Department of Livestock Services.

The field engagements brought together dairy and goat farmers, local officials, and relevant stakeholders to understand practical risks, livelihood vulnerabilities, and gaps in financial protection at the community level.

Key findings highlighted:
• Rising heat stress, livestock disease outbreaks, and climate shocks
• Significant income losses among dairy and goat farming households
• Strong demand for affordable and transparent livestock insurance
• Need for trusted, technology-enabled insurance delivery systems

The insights from these engagements will help us develop inclusive, farmer-centered insurance solutions that strengthen resilience, reduce financial vulnerability, and support sustainable agricultural livelihoods across Bangladesh.

In Bangladesh, rising stress, anxiety, and burnout among working adults are increasingly visible, yet mental health often remains unspoken due to stigma, limited awareness, and the lack of structured workplace support.

On 30 April, Innovision Consulting hosted an interactive Mental Health and Stress Management session for our Dhaka team to build awareness and equip participants with practical tools to manage everyday stress. Through open dialogue and guided activities, the session created space for reflection, honesty, and shared learning.

We were glad to have Dr. Ituki Chakma, a public health and international development professional with expertise across medicine, public health, and psychology, facilitate the session and ground the discussion in both evidence and lived experience.

At Innovision Consulting, we believe mental well-being requires continuous attention, safe spaces, and a culture where people feel heard and supported.

Despite a young population, Bangladesh faces a workforce crisis driven less by job shortages than by which jobs are socially acceptable. With over 84% of workers in the informal sector and youth unemployment at 16.8%, social norms heavily shape labour market outcomes.

In "The Job Stigma Crisis | Why Social Status is Killing Bangladesh's Economy? | EconoMix | EP 09", Tasmiah Rahman, Portfolio Advisor, Inclusive Growth at Innovision Consulting, highlights how stigma, class, and cultural expectations steer young people toward "respectable" careers, often away from real opportunities.

Key issues include:
• Stigma around low-status work
• The pull of government jobs
• Persistent informality
• Limited roles for women beyond garments
• Mental health barriers

The discussion calls for shifting national narratives, strengthening career guidance, and recognising unpaid care work.

At this critical moment, the question remains: can redefining the value of work unlock growth, or will status anxiety continue to hold Bangladesh back?

Bangladesh’s remittance economy is evolving, but the reality behind the numbers is more complex than it appears.

Formal channels are expanding.
Exchange rates are stabilizing.
Informal transfers are declining.
Yet migrant costs and debt burdens remain high.

So, what explains this shift?

In J&J Fireside | Episode 2: Migrant workers, and dispatches from New Delhi and Riyadh, macroeconomist Jyoti Rahman and Md. Rubaiyath Sarwar, Managing Director of Innovision Consulting, shares insights from observations across Riyadh and New Delhi.

From the ground, they unpack how remittance systems are changing, and what it means for migrant workers and Bangladesh’s economy.

This episode explores:
• The shift toward formal financial systems
• Hidden costs and realities of migrant labor
• Changing global demand for skills and services
• The role of soft power in shaping future opportunities

Originally featured via Counterpoint, a platform known for in-depth analysis of Bangladesh and global issues.

Beyond compliance, what does it really take to make work safe, fair, and sustainable?

This International Workers’ Day, we highlight a critical gap: decades of audits have improved documentation, but not always working conditions, especially for the workers who need protection most.

At Innovision Consulting, we believe decent work is strategic infrastructure, not a checkbox. Through our Industrial Productivity and Worker Wellbeing (IPWW) portfolio, we design interventions that are preventive, inclusive, and built to outlast the projects that fund them.

Because safer workplaces don’t come from better audits. They come from better systems.

What do you think makes the biggest difference in improving working conditions?
Stronger regulations, better systems, or worker-led solutions?
