Google Ads Server-Side Conversion Tracking

Recently, a business owner reached out to me.

They were running Google Ads, getting leads…

But the reported conversions were way off.

So, I started digging.

GA4 showed more leads.

But Google Ads only tracked part of them.

That’s where I found the culprit:

◾ Browser-based tracking was breaking

◾ Ad blockers + iOS updates killed signals

◾ Cookies were expiring too soon

Here’s what happens:

When a user submits a form, the event fires client-side.

But many signals never reach Google Ads.

Result → You lose conversions and bidding data.

The fix was clear:

Switch to server-side tracking.

Steps:

  • Set up server container in GTM

  • Route conversions server-to-server

  • Send clean data directly to Google Ads

  • Reduce data loss from blockers and cookies

↳ Now every valid lead is tracked.

↳ Google Ads optimizes with accurate data.

Only mobile visitors were converting.

Desktop traffic?
Almost dead.

At first, I thought mobile users were just more serious buyers.
But when I dug deeper, the truth hit me.
 • The desktop form looked broken
 • Load time was over 6 seconds
 • The CTA button was buried way down
 • The whole layout felt clunky

No wonder nobody is converted.
So we fixed the basics:
 • Clean, simple desktop layout
 • Fewer form fields
 • Faster load speed
 • CTA right in front of the user

The result?
Desktop conversions jumped 187%.
Mobile stayed strong.
CPA dropped 42%.

The takeaway is simple:
Don’t blame the traffic.
Blame the experience.

1. Average CPC (Cost Per Click) – From Keyword Planner
2. Expected Daily Clicks – From Keyword Planner forecast
3. Conversion Rate (CR%) – From your past campaign data or industry benchmark
4. Target Leads Per Month – Your business goal

✅ How to Calculate Daily Budget:
Formula 1: Minimum Daily Budget to Stay Active All Day
Average CPC x Expected Daily Clicks = Minimum Daily Budget
Example:
If CPC is $2 and you expect 50 clicks per day:
👉 2 x 50 = $100/day

✅ How to Calculate Monthly Budget:
Formula 2: Monthly Budget Estimate
Daily Budget x 30.4 (average days in a month)
Example:
👉 $100 x 30.4 = $3,040/month

✅ How to Calculate Budget to Hit Lead Goal:
Formula 3: Budget for Lead Target
Target Leads per Month ÷ Conversion Rate = Required Clicks
Required Clicks x Average CPC = Needed Monthly Budget
Example:
Target: 50 leads/month
Conversion Rate: 5% (0.05)
👉 50 ÷ 0.05 = 1,000 clicks needed
👉 1,000 x $2 CPC = $2,000/month budget needed.
