🌱 Innovation is key to building a more sustainable future for agriculture.

New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) can help breeders develop improved crop varieties that are better equipped to cope with climate change, pests, diseases, and other challenges facing farmers today.

These innovations can contribute to more resilient food systems, greater sustainability, and enhanced food security for future generations. 🧬🥔🌍

It's time to unlock the potential of NGTs and ensure that EU rules keep pace with scientific progress!

Did you know that grasslands cover more than half of the Earth's land area? 🌍 🌿

These ecosystems do much more than provide grazing land. Grasslands support food production, help conserve biodiversity, improve soil health, and store around one-third of the world's terrestrial carbon stocks.

A new book highlights why grasslands are essential for creating more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems.

One of the most remarkable findings is that much of the carbon stored by grasslands is held underground in roots and soils, making it less vulnerable to extreme events such as wildfires.

As climate change continues to affect weather patterns and agricultural productivity, understanding and protecting grasslands has never been more important.

🌱 Healthy grasslands support healthy farms, healthy ecosystems, and a healthier planet.

🌱 European agri-food organisations are calling on the European Parliament to support the agreed compromise on New Genomic Techniques (NGTs).

Why does it matter?

✅ More innovation for sustainable agriculture
✅ Better tools to tackle climate change and pests
✅ Greater resilience for farmers and food systems
✅ Improved competitiveness for Europe
✅ Transparent rules for the entire value chain

The compromise text represents a carefully balanced agreement that supports both innovation and transparency. The coalition is urging policymakers to adopt the proposal without further amendments.

🥔 Potatoes are more innovative than you might think.

Researchers and breeders spend years developing potato varieties that can resist diseases, adapt to different climates, reduce food waste and still deliver the perfect crunch for your favorite chips. 🍟

Thanks to innovation in plant breeding:
✔️ Potatoes can now be stored longer with less spoilage
✔️ Farmers can grow more resilient crops
✔️ Food production becomes more sustainable

On this International Day of Potato, let’s recognize the science, dedication and collaboration behind one of the world’s most important crops ➡️ https://tinyurl.com/4t9w894t

Fun ! 🎉

Every time you squeeze a lemon into water or over a meal, you are using a fruit shaped by thousands of years of human ingenuity. 🍋🍋‍🟩🍊

Modern lemons were developed through ancient cross-breeding and careful cultivation long before genetics became a science.

Early farmers selected citrus fruits for:
✔️ Better flavor
✔️ Longer storage
✔️ Food preservation
✔️ Easier transport

This a fascinating reminder that plant breeders have been innovating in agriculture for millennia!

How can we protect apple production in a changing climate?

Scientists in the US are working on the roots of the problem...literally. 𖣂🍏🍎

As climate change brings more extreme weather events such as sudden temperature changes and drought, researchers are developing stronger and more resilient apple trees.

Their work focuses on improving root stocks, the foundation of apple trees, to help orchards better cope with environmental stress while continuing to produce healthy and abundant fruit.

What makes this research especially remarkable is the patience and long-term commitment behind it: developing new resilient varieties can take decades, but it is essential for the future of sustainable agriculture and food production. 🌱🍎

A new scientific breakthrough could make one of the world’s most important foods more nutritious and climate-smart. 🌾 🧬🍽️

Researchers have developed high-protein rice with improved essential amino acids and a lower glycemic index, helping address protein malnutrition while supporting sustainable agriculture.

Even more promising:
✔️ The rice remains high-yielding
✔️ It grows faster than many common varieties
✔️ The technology could also be extended to other staple crops like wheat and maize

The latest statistics show that at least 14.77 million people around the globe suffer from protein-energy malnutrition. To revitalize traditional staples, scientists propose biofortifying cereals, as replacing just 5% of refined carbohydrates with protein significantly reduces the risk of non-commun...

Fun ! 🎉

Nature may have created the world’s “bluest” fruit, without using any blue pigment at all. 🫐 🤔

Deep in the rainforests of Australia and Southeast Asia grows Elaeocarpus angustifolius, also known as the “blue marble” tree. Its fruit shines with an almost unreal metallic cobalt colour that looks digitally enhanced but it is completely natural.

What makes it extraordinary is that the fruit is not blue because of pigments. Instead, microscopic structures in the fruit’s skin reflect blue wavelengths of light, much like butterfly wings or peacock feathers create shimmering colours.

Scientists believe this unique adaptation helps birds spot the fruit more easily in dense rainforest environments, helping the tree spread its seeds over long distances. 🐦🌱

The quandong’s fruit appear intensely blue, but without producing any pigment at all. Here’s this blue fruit evolved to use physics over chemistry.
