LP's Mark Watts, backed by BEUC in latest euronews interview, urges the European Commission 'to get airlines, insurers, and member states around the table to address the issue as quickly as possible' to save the airlines and passenger cash refunds.

"Let’s do that in days, not weeks or months," he said.

"Of course the airlines have a cash flow crisis, but it’s probably nothing compared to the cash flow crisis being faced by many households," one of the authors of the EU’s air passenger rights law tells Euronews.

Speaking to Euronews, former MEP and LP Director Mark Watts who was one of the co-authors of the EU’s legislation on passenger rights, said the failure to provide ticket refunds for flights cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic is “completely unacceptable”. He helped write the legislation that requires airlines to offer refunds within seven days.

“I’m very concerned because what this is is an attempt to make the passengers pay for the bailout,” Watts told Euronews Tonight.

“This is the passengers’ money that they’ve put into a ticket for a flight that didn’t take place."
