Stoemp founder Gaetano Licata [ ] sat down for the first in a series of short interviews exploring the ins and outs of graphic design and branding culture.

“Collecting stickers is a way for me to see — very quickly and not on my screen — how graphic design has evolved over the last 30-40 years. You can see the traces of trends and new tools and technologies that had their place in the sun. [...] That’s what is so cool about stickers, they’re always pushing boundaries of what you can do with such a basic medium.”

— Indovina un po'! Settebello, Brussels’ most cherished Sicilian boutique located in the buzzing Rue de Flandre, is opening a sister store in the south of the city. Having worked hand in hand with the owners since day one on visual identity, signage, strategy, and social media, Stöemp naturally participated in this next chapter of the Settebello story.

To avoid the impression of a chain of shops or a franchise, we approached the conception of Settebello Bailly by creating a whole new personality. Rather than duplicating the existing store’s aesthetics, we developed a vibrant deli experience for customers looking for that Sicilian slice of sunshine the boutique is known for. Contemporary bold colours meet traditional ceramics and handpicked local products, all of which are complemented by the sophisticated graphic system developed for the store.

— Positioned at the forefront of visual effects creation in Belgium and internationally, UFX came to us with the challenge of a full scope rebrand able to encapsulate their versatility, professionalism, and innovative approach.

After lengthy analysis and rethinking of their strategy and positioning within their field, we developed a challenging branding system that threw the customary simple, static logo and visual identity out of the window.
UFX took on a whole new atmosphere, inspired by futuristic artworks (think 2001: A Space Odyssey meets John McCracken’s Utah monolith) and the stacking of First Nations totem poles. The result is much more than a visual identity: it’s a testimony to their skill and a door opened onto the multifaceted universe of UFX.

— The forward-thinking Brussels-based theatre .brussels is turning 80 this year. And in the true avant-garde spirit that they embody, rather than celebrating the past eight decades, they’re looking towards the future.

Stoëmp transposed the theatre’s resolutely experimental and pioneering nature into an anniversary campaign that features the members of the “LeSbeul” company, snapped in a no-filter, no-nonsense style. In addition to the minimalistic and striking visuals, the theatre came up with a radically inclusive neologism following the verbal identity crafted hand-in-hand with Stoëmp and .pdf : TOUXTES, setting the tone for the next 80 years of programming.

— Alongside No Waste Republic’s daring visual identity characterised by flashy colours, bubbly bold type, and their signature blackbird mascot, we crafted a strong tone of voice to convey their values. Militant, activist and a little bit pesky, their verbal identity hinges upon slogans fit to take to the streets on demonstration flags or placards crossed with ingenious wordplay.

Applied to the naming of their two main brews, this strategy gave way to “Flour Power”, a light Pale Ale made from leftover bread and “Grain Again”, a refreshing Pilsner giving loaves a second lease on life.

— La Miche came to us with the aim of rebranding their circular beer that uses leftover bread to create delicious brews. We collectively took a deep dive into what it means to engage in responsible and ethical food and beverage production today. How could we translate the brand’s ecological mission and positioning as a B-corp company all the while challenging the visual codes and marketing strategies that have been linked to beer for centuries?
We visited breweries and bakeries, analysed the market, had meaningful discussions, and of course drank a few bottles to make sure we were going to get it just right.

Throwing tradition out the window, we positioned the brand as belonging to a revolutionary group of “waste warriors”. This was supported by a name change from La Miche to No Waste Republic, and an omnipresent verbal identity rooted in activism boosted with a touch of humour.

— Every year 120 thousand tonnes of bread goes to waste in Belgium alone. That’s a huge issue that No Waste Republic decided to tackle by doing what Belgians do best… beer!

Using leftover loaves from local bakeries, No Waste Republic brews tasty beers and gives bread a second chance.

Overlooking the whole project is their mascot, this sneaky baguette-loving bird that Stoëmp created to embody the cheeky and fun personality of No Waste Republic. Teamed with an outrageous colour palette including flashy pink and bold green, NWR threw all traditional beer aesthetics out the window in order to stand out from the crowd and on the shelves. Each and every conversation, comment, joke, and insight collected during these preliminary meet-ups allow both us as designers and our clients to see their true individuality, their weaknesses, and of course their strong points. This later feeds into crafting a strategy and visual and verbal identity that fits like a glove—a recyclable one in Resortecs’ case ;).

While staying true to the design codes that convey a pure, refined champagne moment (think embossed gold, luxury printing, and sophisticated typography), we created a contemporary identity for a brand that’s destined to become a timeless, high-end classic.
