Kidnap Your Designer

Kidnap Your Designer www.kidnapyourdesigner.com Kidnap Your Designer is the name of a Brussels graphic design agency. Graphic design should not exist without ideas. K.Y.D.

For each project the studio develops its graphic design around an idea, a concept closely related to the subject involved. When sense makes graphic-design then design-graphic makes sense. This studio was founded in 2006 by Caroline°Camille Dath, a graduate of Saint-Luc Liège and erg (École de Recherche Graphique, Brussels). Damien Safie, a classmate from erg, joined her in 2008 as partner. Esther

Poch teamed up permanently in 2018. The studio produces creative works using typography and printing techniques for clients from the music, art, design or architecture fields. Cultural institutions and associations also missions the studio on their visual communication tools. Kidnap Your Designer also produces experimental and self-produced projects, exhibitions & workshops. So do as you're told and kidnap your designer if you want great work! The team

Caroline°Camille, studio partner, likes to be involved in a thousand projects: from teaching at the erg, to collective practices. She has also taken up a master's degree in Gender Studies and is conducting research on ‘inclusive typography’ (Bye Bye Binary). Her pet projects are mechanics and vintage cars! Damien, studio partner, also spends time in a teaching practice at the erg, in a transdisciplinary class. He has a keen eye for contemporary art which inspires his graphic design. In his spare time he likes to capture surprising elements of reality through photography or to give a second life to stylish objects. He also happens to be a singer! Esther joined the practice permanently in 2018; she does a wonderful job of running the studio and guiding projects through to their conclusion. She chooses colour schemes better than anyone, and has a good eye for graphic design compositions. She also enjoys ceramics in her spare time. Enzo, after spending 6 months in the studio as an intern, will join the team in 2022. They are currently finishing their Master Degree on Queer pedagogical practices at ISBA Besançon (F). We are looking forward to being united in Brussels soon. Antonin is in charge of the motion design of the projects and is always there to lend a hand when things get hectic. Outside the studio, he has a crazy personal illustration practice all of his own. We recommend you to have a look at his Insta! And don't worry mom & dad! We won't be really kidnaped...
Well we hope! is an allusion to
‘Kill your Idols’ as well as many other stuff...

Tour Guide — Brussels’ Bouwmeester Maître Architecte

The Brussels’ Bouwmeester Maître Architecte mission is to enhance the spatial quality of urban projects from an independent perspective. During Belgium’s EU presidency, with the other Belgian Bouwmeesters, they composed a set of walking tours of recent projects architectural and urbanistic to show how Brussels is changing.

They commissioned us to collaborate on a project that promotes a deeper understanding of contemporary architectural and urbanistic developments across the city. The paper and digital tour guides showcase recent projects, inviting you to explore how our cities are evolving. We proposed creating unique maps for each tour, complemented by detailed explanations of the featured projects. This approach allows for focused attention, maximizes the map’s size, and enables targeted distribution, reducing waste.

To optimize the process, given the tight schedule, we implemented an HTML-to-print workflow. This allowed the client team to upload images and typeset text directly, streamlining the production timeline.

Jean-François D’Or, Moodboards at Grand Hornu Images — Exhibition signage & catalogue
2013

For this monographic design exhibition at Grand Hornu, we worked with Jean-François D’Or – Designer of the Year, 2013 – to create the typographic guidelines for this event. We chose the font called Aperçu partly because of the beautiful « ç » integral to the name of the designer.

For the book accompanying the exhibition, we designed a light and elegant grid to present his work as a designer. Playing with this specifically chosen font in various sizes, the titles, the texts but especially the meaningful headings were given prominence and allowed to reflect the « moodboard » aspect of the entire project.

Q***r Rising #2 — La Fabrique, Université Toulouse Jean Jaurès ut2jart

The second edition of the ‘Q***r Rising’ collective exhibition in Toulouse showcases artworks using the body as a powerful tool for expression and a generator of unique shapes and images.

Curated by Jérome Carrié, the exhibition is built as a space to show artistic experimentation and the deconstruction of norms, a realm of fiction and self-narratives, a critical tool for resistance against systemic oppression.

Foto Kanal: Images and realiteiten — Book
2012brussels

We designed this book for .brussels (formerly known as ADT-ATO) and Platform Kanal, a citizen movement who tried to make city together in the central districts around the Brussels canal until 2014.

This book presents images and realities of youngsters in Brussels. It features stories of the youth around the canal side, with photos by Kurt Deruyter (). With the cover larger than the inside pages, the book is organised around Hilde’s walking tour which is laid out vertically on the pages. Brussels’ central areas are depicted one by one, revealing all the richness of its neighbourhoods.

Signage

Here is a selection of signage projects we had the joy to work on. From exhibitions to schools, the concepts and materialities always bring us to new paths to sign the way. These projects also get us to collaborate with talented people that we’d like to thank. Enjoy and give us a call if your building would need a few arrows.

BEAU 2014-2024 — Architecture book

We are delighted to present the anniversary book of BEAU Architects, a Hong Kong based studio led by Charlotte Lafont-Hugo & Gilles Vanderstocken.

Their 10 year practice builds up an impressive amount of high quality projects, from art exhibition structures up to tower buildings! The book features a consistent and qualitative photographic and textual material about their project, four interviews with clients made by Charlotte and Gilles, list and maps of their projects. The printed object itself with loose covers binded by a H cross rubber band is directly inspired by the bluntness of their architectural practice, in their words « never afraid to show how things are built ». The book was launched during their exhibition at Current Plans.

Have a look at their incredible work! 💅

La Panacée — Identity, website, signage, exhibition communication, catalogue
2012-2014

La Panacée (now part of MO.CO) is the centre for contemporary culture of the City of Montpellier. Opened in the city centre, it emphasises a cross-disciplinary approach with exhibitions and events in three main areas: visual arts, new forms of writing, and digital technology.

We’ve teamed up with the locally based studio ABRèGe, who are architects, set-designers, geeks & trendsetters, to design the full identity: logo, website, stationery, signage and the communication of the first seasons and exhibitions. With a starting statement such as « virtual life has an impact in real life », we came up with a visual concept of mingling and blurring the boundaries between 2D and 3D.

Thanks again to Franck Bauchard, Delphine Goutes () and Eli Commins () for their trust. As well as Adrien Revel (.pro) and Baptiste Genoyer () with whom we had the pleasure to collaborate for this signature.

Amal Amjahid Sports Hall — Signage
2022

Amal Amjahid Sports Hall is community centre along the canal in Molenbeek, near Brussels city center. The project lead by &bogdan (Brussels based architects) is a multifunctional building including a sports hall, a boxing club, a cafetaria, a day nursery and one housing unit.

For this building we’ve designed a set of abstract pictograms and a custom typeface for the entrance neon sign, based on the architectural grid and original arches of the building.

1 + 1 + 1 = 1080 — Catalogue
2014

This is the catalogue for the exhibition « 1 + 1 + 1 = 1080 » which brought together three different contemporary artists living in this area: Emilio López-Menchero + Peter Downsbrough + Beat Streuli = 1080 (the district’s postcode). This exceptional exhibition was produced and held by the « Maison des Cultures et de la Cohésion Sociale de Molenbeek-Saint-Jean » (Brussels) in collaboration with Métropole Culture 2014.

Kurt Lewy — Exhibition identity, catalogue, signage
2021

‘Towards Abstraction’ – an exhibition about the Brussels based German modern artist Kurt Lewy (1898 – 1963) by The Jewish Museum of Belgium and the Callewaert Vanlangendonck Gallery.

From the public communication posters to the exhibition signage and the catalogue, we were delighted to work with this precious material. The exhibition scenography emphasises the evolution of Kurt Lewy’s work from figuration to abstraction through time. The catalogue is refined and textured at the same time. A paint reproduction features on the cover of the book which is discretely embossed and only be revealed with skimming light. As the timeline goes by, the layout shifts page after page from left to right, emphasising almost unconsciously this classification choice towards the most modern works of the artist.

Pink Screens & Genres d’à côté — Identity
2016

Pink Screens is the main event of Genres d’à côté, a Brussels based organisation promoting alternative sexuality and gender through different activities revolving around the cinematographic world. The Pink Screens festival brings once a year everybody together for 10 fabulous days to celebrate diversity.

Through the editions, the festival had built some communication recognition based on a strong colour duo, magenta & yellow and a new main illustration every year. We’re always excited to work with this admirable material and to improve our work in collaboration with so many talented illustrators.

BEAU Architects — Identity
2014

We have designed the visual identity of BEAU Architects, a Hong Kong based studio led by Charlotte Lafont-Hugo & Gilles Vanderstocken.

The logo is made of the four letters of the name superimposed on top of each other, creating something between art deco and freemason esoteric symbols or between a map and stained glass structure. A wide range of references suggesting the extent of their interest in projects.

Have a look at their incredible work, and stay tuned to see the latest exciting project we collaborate with them on! 💅
