Our own Zdravka Evtimova this year participates in the European Writers’ Festival in London taking place on May 16 and 17.

We are happy to see Zdravka on the “Back to Nature” discussion at the British Library on Saturday, May 16 at 12:45.
“Three award-winning, multi-talented female writers return to nature to tackle the threat of climate change, violence, war, poverty and injustice. But these exceptional books are far from depressing, elevating these stories of girls, women and grandmothers, with profound emotional truths, sharp satire, glowing prose and the solace of nature.”
Evtimova will share the stage with Małgorzata Lebda (Poland), Carolina Pihelgas (Estonia)
Chair: Antonia Lloyd-Jones

Zdravka Evtimova is a Bulgarian writer, translator, academic and author of eleven books, including the novels "Thursday" and "The Wolves of Staro Selo" and the short story collections "Blood of a Mole" and "Pernik Stories". Her work has been translated and published in more than 30 countries. She has received numerous awards including the Mihai Eminescu Prose Prize and the Hristo G. Danov Prize for her contribution to Bulgarian culture.

Evtimova's participation is supported by the Bci London - Bulgarian Cultural Institute in London.

Bulgaria is a Guest of Honour at the 22nd Thessaloniki Book Fair / Διεθνής Έκθεση Βιβλίου Θεσσαλονίκης!

The event will take place from 7 May to 10 May, 2026, featuring the theme “Generation of Readers / Book Generators”

“Over the last decade, Bulgarian literature has been gaining increasing international visibility. Prominent voices of modern Bulgarian prose are winning global recognition, with numerous translations being published in various languages. Bulgarian literature is proud of Georgi Gospodinov's International Booker Prize (2023), as well as the selection of Irena Hristova Ivanova (Rene Karabash) for the shortlist of the same prize (2026) (The Booker Prizes)", stated Victor Stoyanov, the Deputy Minister of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria, at a press conference at Hellenic Foundation for Books and Culture (HFBC) in Athens, quoted by HFBC.

"In 2024, 2025, and 2026, dozens of novels, poetry collections, and short stories were published in many languages around the world. Bulgarian authors and their translators are becoming more widely known locally and abroad through EUPL awards and PEN nominations, while talented illustrators participate in major cultural events and international book fairs.

For the 22nd edition of the Book Fair, we focused on inviting prominent names from our modern literary scene who are well-known in our country and have recently been translated into Greek, such as Teodora Dimova, Elena Alexieva, Rene Karabash, Ina Valchanova, and Iana Boukova. We will also have with us two of the most important children’s book authors: Zornitsa Hristova, an award-winning author, translator, and publisher whose works have been translated into dozens of languages, and Kapka Kaneva, one of the most well-known illustrators and designers on the modern Bulgarian scene."

Bulgaria’s participation as Guest of Honour includes presentations of the modern Bulgarian literary landscape, a comprehensive market overview, publishing trends, grant opportunities, and funding programs. All the activities are united under the slogan “Literature Beyond Borders”. Ten publishers from Bulgaria will participate in the professional program of the Thessaloniki International Book Fair, giving Greek authors active in prose, children’s books, poetry, and non-fiction the opportunity to gain greater visibility in Bulgaria through more translations of Greek titles into Bulgarian.

"Lupo and Tumba" by Petya Kokudeva is coming out in Romanian, thanks to Lora Nenkovska’s inventive translation, published by Editura Arthur.

Editura Arthur is one of the most influential children's publishers in Romania, publishing also: Maurice Sendak, Roald Dahl, the Winnie and Wilbur books, and the Harry Potter series.

This edition of "Lupo and Tumba" is different from the other foreign ones, because it combines together both of the original Bulgarian two parts.

Here is what Editura Arthur say about “Lupo and Tumba”, on its back cover: "A book that enhances the beauty of the world and creates a magical refuge where curiosity is the most important compass."

Petya Kokudeva will participate at the 19th edition of the Bookfest International Book Fair in Bucharest, Romania, where Bulgaria will be the guest of honor (June 3–7, 2026). There Petya will present the book to the Romanian readers.

This is the sixth foreign language in which "Lupo and Tumba" gets published. The book has already been translated in: Croatian (trans. by Ksenija Banovic), Farsi (trans. by Ludmila Yaneva), German (trans. by Petya Lund), Turkish (trans. by prof. Hasine Sen Karadeniz).

Vera Mutafchieva's remarkable novel "The Case of Cem" is hitting the shelves in Spain next week! The Spanish translation is coming out, thanks to Automática Editorial and is translated by the talented María Vútova.

"If there is one thing that history has “taught” the novel to see, it is how great things can come from small; “The Case of Cem” returns the favor, then, by demonstrating just how insignificant the vast majority of our grand conceits appear when viewed through the turned-around telescope of history. Mutafchieva understands our venial helplessness to be one of the tragedies of human life."

We are excited that earlier this week the novels "The Pain Comes Later" by Antonia Apostolova and "Rodinia" by Nikolay Terziyski were shortlisted for the 2026 Novel or the Year Award, given by the National Endowment Fund "13th Centuries Bulgaria".

"The Pain Comes Later" is composed as a life story spanning over countries, generations and the four relationships in his life, its key one – a taboo. The retrospective monologue of this modern-day father fills one of the fundamental gaps in Abraham and Isaac’s story: the missing account of what a man goes through before sacrificing his own son, and of the way he justifies it.

"Rodinia" by Nikolay Terziyski is a tale of a journey and a tale of return. A space both illusory and real. Rodinia is the vast supercontinent that existed seven hundred million years ago, shaken and shattered into fragments, only for its remnants to reconnect millions of years later. In a very similar way, the stories in this book are fragments of a greater whole—they split and rejoin, reflect one another, guiding us toward the essence, toward the greater meaning, turning the course of time and filling a fundamental void.
