Australia Independent Film Festival goes 'climate neutral', powered by Tree Plan.

The Australia Independent Film Festival is an annual Australian film festival that was founded in February 2018 by Brisbane filmmakers Richard Lawton and Jeremy Rigby. They had a shared dream of creating a film festival built on trust, openness and communication that would showcase and celebrate the very best in independent cinema from Australia and around the world.

Known as “the festival where stars shine,” the Australia Independent Film Festival (AIFF) is on track to become Australia's premiere short film festival. Founded in 2017 AIFF has grown from strength to strength and is now a prominent event on the festival circuit.

To offset the carbon footprint of their upcoming edition the festival directors decided to plant 100 trees with Tree Plan.
50 trees were planted in Kenya and 50 trees in Haiti.

The canopy that blocks the sun rays during the day in forests, and holds the heat during the night, is disappearing due to the deforestation happening every day. This leads to huge ups and downs in temperature distribution which hurts animals and plants, and forces them to face near-extinction.

🌱80% of the flora and fauna are losing their habitats to deforestation. And this is not just a biodiversity issue, but it also has an effect on medicinal research and local populations.

🍃46-58 thousand square miles of forest are lost every year. That's 48 football fields a minute.

If any of those facts makes you feel like you want to contribute to the reforestation cause, take a look at the link in our bio and help plant a tree!

Being without trees can literally harm us 👇

Did you know that deforestation deprives the forest of portions of its canopy? This blocks the sun's rays during the day, helps hold the heat at night and it can lead to huge up and down swings in temperatures on the ground. This, in turn, hurts animals and plants, and forces them to face near-extinction.

80% of the flora and fauna are losing their habitats to deforestation. And this is not just a biodiversity issue, but it also has an effect on medicinal research and local populations.

3.5 million Bangladeshi and Indian people depend on the Sundarbans. 👇

This natural habitat that is a nesting place for a variety of birds, marine life and mammals, is a Wetlands of International Importance and a UNESCO World Heritage site. They are an area of about 10000 sq. km. that is shared between Bangladesh and India.

And this forest has become a grave concern for the people who rely on its resources and protection. Illegal forest felling, wildlife hunting, habitat degradation and climate change are all causes for concern that are threatening the integrity of the Sundarbans.

🌱The unsustainable cutting of the Nypa fruticans or improper honey harvesting, as well as the mishandling of the fish and crab populations there are just a few of the issues the Sandarbans are facing. Illegal shrimp farming, felling of prawn fries and harvesting of the tiger prawns without any certification are the main causes of the decline of the flora and fauna biodiversity in the forest.

It's tree history: Meet Wattieza👇

🍃Having a tiny plant evolve from one with a fragile stem to a sturdy, hardy tree is a feat of mother nature's engineering. The process of evolving trees is called arborescence and it's been around ever since plants came to be.

🟩The transition from a fragile steam to bark, and small proportions to vertical growth upwards towards the sun is not easy, but the extra sunlight is always worth it, as it contributes to a process called convergent evolution. It's about similar species evolving together to have functionally similar features. What's the tangible result of that? Well,...

🌱The earliest tree fossils result of such a process were found in nowadays New York, and they are presumed to be some 385 million years old. The tree itself was a prehistoric version of a fern, and it stood about 8 meters tall. It was likely that it didn't have any leaves, but was mostly covered in "branchlets", just like on the picture.

Planting a tree is an investment as much as it is an act of kindness. Actually doing the deed, picking a time, picking the right place, the right soil, understanding how to repopulate an area and how this specific species can be of good to it is invaluable.🌱

🍃Do you know what else is? The time you would invest actually scouting a location, picking a tree species, understanding the intricacies of moving it into the soil of planting it, going to the location and actually shoveling to put it into the ground.

This time you would spend, this mental effort to keep this tree in the back of your mind as a task to go ahead and do, just so you can serve earth or another human being or animal by providing them with shelter is humility. It's an investment in oneself. It's the upmost act of selflessness and determination.🟩

To give up on something you own, so you can give to someone else. To invest time and effort into starting something that will last a couple of lifetimes, this is an act of kindness.

The deforestation in some areas in Malawi has increased the pressure on remaining forests to provide shelter and warmth and to meet people's resource needs overall. 👇

It's been specifically hard on Malawi's wildlife, as many animals have been forced to find a new home with the years, which led to a deeper segregation between people and wildlife areas.

Reforesting those zones with more indigenous trees will increase the biodiversity of species available and bring about more flora to areas that were impacted. In time, those new forests will help improve the soil health, prevent erosion and bring balance to the people of Malawi.

At least this is what Lovemore was aiming to do and succeeded with in Kasungu. 🌱

We aren't the only species that benefit from the grace of trees. There are so many species of both the flora and fauna that rely on them for shelter, protection and food. And quite literally so👇

Researches of Stanford University conducted a study over a 10 year period, as they observed 908 plant and animal species and recorded 37,737 results. They were looking into the impact trees have on specifically animals in their direct vicinity.

Animals such as bats, bees, owls, woodpeckers, squirrels, songbirds and more are crucial to pollination and some are also responsible for protecting us from rodents or insects such as mosquitos.

In their 2016 study, the scientists discovered that four of the six animal groups they were observing, saw a significant biodiversity boost by having more tree cover.

Adding a single tree to a pasture can raise the amount bird species from zero to 80. The more trees reforest the area, the more endangered species begin to appear.

Every living species on this earth has a language that it uses to communicate to others with👇

Whether it's in the animal kingdom, around us humans or otherwise, we all have a way of expressing and sending signals to others if there is a threat or a problem. This is the sole reason language actually came to be in the first place.

Believe it or not, trees also developed their way of communicating to each other through soil fungi🍃

A mycorrhizal type is what is behind not just multiple trees' communication, but also entire forests'. They create huge communication systems and also protect the trees from harmful bacteria while they are at it. Those fungi also share their water storage with any flora around them, which is why this specific type of is so important to have around in dry areas.

The trees that are much older than others have been connected for hundreds if not thousands of years, warning each other about insects, droughts and other threats.

Trees are much more like us than you think. Do you want to help them out? Go to our website!

There isn't something more powerful than a man's passion to do something that is born out of the pure intentions and drive he has. 👇

And there isn't anything more beautiful than a man starting a movement that ends up becoming an organization that employs over 580 local people.

Jurgen Heytens is that man. He started off with one goal in mind - to help not only plant but also raise trees, and seen as there are enough deforested areas in Congo to do that. He wanted to make a change, and he is continuously doing that 👇

He even started doing agroforestation (growing of crops and other trees) in the forests to help fund his work. And it is quite expensive to care for trees, given that 500 Euros only cover for 1 ha (about 1000 trees) of forest.

The site he's currently working on is one that is so hot and dry it made people move away. With the help of the reforestation of the land, people might be able to repopulate it.
