The interior of the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption, completed in 1971 by Pietro Belluschi and Pier Luigi Nervi, is an awe-inspiring interplay of structure, light, and symbolism. The soaring 190-foot hyperbolic paraboloid ceiling, composed of 1,680 triangular coffers, channels natural light into a serene, diffused glow. The stained glass windows rise upward, forming a luminous cross that emphasizes the cathedral’s spiritual mission. Four massive concrete pylons anchor the structure and frame the vast, open nave, creating a sense of stability amid the ethereal space. Above the altar, Richard Lippold’s kinetic sculpture of radiating metallic rods evokes cosmic order, drawing attention heavenward in a powerful gesture of reverence and transcendence.
