I never had an interest in cybersecurity, even though I have a background in computer science. I love building applications that help solve problems. Over the last six years, I have worked with different teams to build a tax system, Microfinance Cooperative Solution, a retail multi-vendor system, a human resource application, and education technology solutions, to mention a few.
I reached out to "Manny" who is the Founder and vCISO to get intelligence and direction on how to switch careers into cybersecurity since he has been in this field for more than two decades (over 20 years). The first question he asked me was, "Why?"
Why cybersecurity? And here is my response to "Why":
Seeing an intruder in your application is one thing no developer or business wants to experience.
My interest in cybersecurity began when a threat actor penetrated the admin environment of one of the websites I was working on. I was put on the spot until I reached out to the DevOps engineer we worked with on this project to intervene. This is where my interest in cybersecurity began. I want to build solutions that work but also ensure the organization’s information and that of the people they serve are secure.
The next question is "Where?" Where in cybersecurity do you want to come in? After a few minutes of discussion and advice, I came to the conclusion that it is better to start as a Security Operations Center (SOC) Analyst.
I joined a few communities related to this field to gain intelligence about the most basic starting point. I found a lot of individuals talking about the Google Cybersecurity Certificate Program, which is a supposed six-month program.
I believe the Google Cybersecurity Certificate will make me a better fit and will help me develop the professional skills needed to identify vulnerabilities in applications, patch them, identify true positive incidents, and respond to them before they cause harm to the organization. It will also help me implement regulations and compliance standards like PCI DSS, HIPAA, and GDPR, and practice self-security awareness against social engineering. I now possess these skills, which align with various organizations' security goals.
Today, 29th August 2024, I call on security professionals at all levels: Here I am with the Google Cybersecurity Certificate badge, and I am ready to start thwarting the adversaries. I am open to conference and Cyber Events
