We believe that good design should be inclusive. That's why when designing the new signage system at Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg in Genk, Belgium, we took colour blindness into account. We carefully combined a selection of colours and symbols to create a system that is easy for people with different perceptions of colour to navigate.
Prior to the concept stage, we accounted for 15 different zoning regulations in place at the hospital and found that high contrast and differentiation between colours would not be feasible for this system. With these in mind, we strategically defined the colours and alphabetic codes and integrated them with 5 separate routes to ensure that surrounding zones would be clearly identified by widely varied chromatic coding.
The colours were chosen based on research and feedback from the hospital community, and the project was carried out in partnership with Professor Ann Petermans and her students at the Department of Architecture and Interior Architecture at the University of Hasselt , Belgium. With this, we can guarantee easy identification of routes and destinations, regardless of visual impairments or other visual limitations.
We are very proud to be part of this effort to create more inclusive healthcare environments.
