Minister of Social Services, Senator, the Hon. Barbara Cartwright was in Grand Bahama for a two-day visit beginning June 16, 2026 on what was her first visit since assuming her new portfolio.

During her stay, Minister Cartwright and her delegation, inclusive of Minister of State in the Ministry of Social Services, the Hon. Bacchus Rolle; Permanent Secretary Phedra Rahming-Turnquest and Administrative Cadet Whitney Hanna-Williams and Assistant Director of Social Services/Grand Bahama Jodie Burrows, met with senior officers and members of staff at the Department of Social Services and Board members of the Grand Bahama Children's Home.

They also visited the Columbus Houses for Boys and Girls and the Resilience Centre before heading to Eight Mile Rock where they were given a tour of the Social Services office in the Obadiah H. Wilchcombe Complex and the Pine Forest Temporary Shelter.

Holmes Rock Junior High School hosted a Prize Giving Ceremony for the first cohort of graduates on June 15, 2026 at the Eight Mile Rock High School Gymnasium. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, the Hon. Frederick Mitchell; Member of Parliament, Member of Parliament for West Grand Bahama, the Hon. Kingsley Smith, Deputy Director of Education Michelle Bowleg, District Superintendent of Education Maneica Pratt and Rev. Today, June 11, 2026, the Blood Donors Society of Grand Bahama (BDSGB) and the Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) held a press conference at Police Headquarters to announce plans for World Blood Donor Day 2026 which will be observed on Saturday, June 13th. The celebration will begin with an official opening ceremony in the Foyer of the Rand Memorial Hospital at 10:00am and will be followed by the annual blood drive from 11:00am – 3:00pm.

Superintendent Gregory Lockhart, of the Royal Bahamas Police Force and Ravanno Ferguson, president of the Sigma Beta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., long-time partners in this endeavour, are urging organizations and the wider Grand Bahama community to support the event by making a conscious effort to give blood, while encouraging others to do the same. Also present are BDSGB President Lededra Marche, PHA Lab Manager Claudia Glinton and BDSGB member Meritta Strachan.

Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey was among the distinguished guests who joined in celebrating the accomplishments of the Ministry of Youth and Sports' 2026 Youth Leaders Certification Cohort.

On June 6, 2026, following a 16-week course, 30 youth professionals officially transitioned from students to certified youth leaders during a graduation ceremony held at Delphine's at Pelican Bay Resort.

Held under the theme, "Voices of Influence: Agents of Change," the ceremony recognized the cohort's dedication to leadership development, community engagement and their commitment to empowering the next generation of change makers.
