Batswana, Remember the Warnings of Lucas Mangope!

In 1994, the world celebrated the dawn of a new South Africa, but Lucas Mangope stood firm, warning his people—Batswana—of what was to come. He was called stubborn, a sellout, and resistant to change. But today, we must ask ourselves: Was he wrong?

Mangope’s Vision for Batswana

Under his leadership, Bophuthatswana was one of the most developed and self-sufficient homelands. We had:

○ Thriving industries and businesses owned by Batswana.
○ A strong, independent economy that did not rely on South Africa.
○ Well-maintained infrastructure, schools, and hospitals.
○ Land that was still under our control.
○ Cultural preservation—Batswana were united and respected.

He built an economy where Batswana were not beggars but owners of their destiny. But he warned us—if we gave away our independence, it would all be lost.

◇ His Warning About the ANC Government ◇
Mangope told Batswana:
• If you hand over control, your economy will be destroyed.
• The ANC will bring corruption, unemployment, and crime.
• You will lose your land, your wealth, and your identity.
• Batswana will become second-class citizens in their own home.

He refused to hand over Bophuthatswana, not because he was against democracy, but because he saw that Batswana would not benefit in the new system. He stood alone as Batswana turned against him, believing that the ANC government would bring freedom and prosperity.

The Reality We Face Today
Fast forward to today:

• North West, once thriving, is now one of the poorest provinces.
• Unemployment has skyrocketed. Batswana struggle to find jobs while other groups dominate employment opportunities.
• Corruption is everywhere, and service delivery has collapsed.
• Batswana have lost their sense of unity and strength.
• Land ownership among Batswana has declined—our forefathers fought for nothing.

Everything he warned us about has happened.

The Time for Unity is NOW!
Batswana, it is time to wake up! The same way the Zulus, Xhosas, and others prioritize their own people, we MUST do the same! No more apologizing for putting Batswana first!

○ When there are job opportunities, hire Batswana!
○ Speak Setswana proudly—do not be forced to abandon your language.
○ Support Tswana-owned businesses—circulate wealth among our people.
○ Teach your children our history—so they know where they come from.
○ Defend our land and heritage—before we lose everything.

Mangope may be gone, but his message remains. Batswana, we have been too welcoming for too long. It is time to put ourselves first!
Share this message! Tag a Motswana who needs to hear this! The fight for our future starts now!
