No one left behind: Ending GBV for women and girls with Disabilities

Did you know?

Only one in 10 Batswana believe using physical force to discipline a woman is “sometimes” or “always” justified. The opinion is highest among older male adults.

19% of men see domestic violence as a private matter that needs to be handled and resolved in the family, compared to 10% of women

These social beliefs, with some shaped by patriarchy, control, and rigid gender expectations, reinforce a culture where violence is tolerated, excused or even normalized.

Question for you: Which social beliefs or cultural practices do you think unintentionally or intentionally normalize gender-based violence? Your voice matters. Share your thoughts and help us challenge harmful norms.

Every day, women and girls are attacked, silenced, and harassed online. From image-based abuse and cyberstalking to hate speech.

Digital violence is rising fast, but it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Culture is at the heart of behavior, online and offline. The way societies see gender, power, and respect is reflected in digital spaces, and influences how violence is tolerated, normalized, or challenged.

We must all act to stop digital abuse.

Day 1 of 16 days of activism against GBV.

Today, on international day of elimination of violence against women and girls, we turn our focus to the underlying factors that place women and girls at risk.

Economic dependency is a major driver of GBV vulnerability. When survivors lack financial independence, leaving abusive relationships becomes harder and the cycle of silence continues. This is why raising our voices matters. Speaking out helps confront the attitudes that normalize violence, pushes institutions to strengthen support systems, and opens the door for safer spaces where survivors can seek help.

The Survivors Economic Epowerment (SEE) Project in Ghanzi is a powerful example of what this kind of advocacy can achieve. By equipping survivors with practical skills and economic opportunities, it shows how community-led action can restore independence and make real change possible.

07/11/2025

In our recent poll, most of our audience identified agriculture as the sector that requires the most research to unlock its full potential, and, by extension, to advance Botswana’s transformation goals.

Under Botswana’s National Development Plan 12 (NDP 12), the government aims to:
• Increase agriculture’s GDP contribution to 6%
• Reduce food imports by 8%
• Raise agricultural exports to 3.8%
• Build a self-sufficient and competitive sector
(Source: Ministerial address at the NDP12 approval meeting)

While these targets resonate with many, they also invite deeper reflection. Behind public opinion lies valuable insight revealing how people perceive access to resources, exposure to innovation, education levels, and opportunities within the sector. Exploring these perceptions through research can show us where knowledge gaps exist, and how we can empower communities to participate meaningfully.

At People + Gap, we help organizations and policymakers ground bold ambitions in the lived realities of local communities, cultures, and people — through research, evidence-based reporting, and strategic insight.
