⏳🔒 “Transition periods are a crucial part of implementing new laws. For the Botswana Data Protection Act, the transition period was 12 months from the date of commencement. This gave organizations time to understand the new law and make necessary changes to their data protection practices. This period ended on 15 October 2022. 🔐🔒 “Data Controllers and Processors have a big responsibility under the Botswana Data Protection Act. They must ensure the lawfulness and fairness of processing. This means they can only collect and use personal data in a way that’s legal and fair to you. They must also consider purpose limitation (only using the data for the reason it was collected), retention limitation (not keeping the data longer than necessary), and data minimisation (only collecting the data that’s needed). Plus, they must ensure the relevance and adequacy of personal data, and uphold its integrity and confidentiality. It’s all about respecting your privacy and protecting your data! ” 🔐🔒

🌐🔒 "The Botswana Data Protection Act has a broad scope. Its material scope is personal data, which includes any information relating to an identified or identifiable individual. But did you know its territorial scope extends beyond our borders? Even if a data controller isn't established in Botswana, if they use processing means situated within Botswana, they're covered by the Act. This ensures our data protection standards are upheld, no matter where the data controller is based. " 🔒🌐
