CHILDREN IN RURAL AREAS DISADVANTAGED

In Botswana, children alone spend millions of hours annually walking for water. They usually bear the burden of water collection in settlements, Masimo, Meraka and Rural areas. Often than not they walk an average of 2km in some areas. Traditionally we have bigger families of 5, 6, 7 even more! These children primarily source for cooking, drinking, bathing, washing and surely more than 2 trips to nearest source point. This routine, as is a form of responsibility, keeps them away from school commitment.

HEALTH/SANITATION
This is most sensitive aspect these children are exposed to. Since they use uncovered containers, that prompts water loss and likely contaminated, highly get affected from water-related illnesses. This reduces time dedicated on Education.

The Water wheelbarrow is an invention of a virgin plastic made material to create a 100L enclosed container mounted onto the traditional wheelbarrow steel frame. It's designed such that the user may manoeuvre the unit without exerting too much pressure on the neck, shoulders and spine as per traditional head-loading method. Designed after consultations with rural communities in different rural parts in Botswana, the WWB is made from high quality galvanised plastic wheel that can withstand different rural terrains.

MOTIVATING FACTORS
▪It's mainly women and children who walk long distances to fetch water with their head-loading skills.
▪Women carry heavy loads of water (about 20 litres) on their heads in some rural villages/lands/cattle posts around Botswana. This causes severe damage to the spine and neck over time.
▪Women are primary caretakers of the millions of children that fall ill each year from water-related illnesses. This affects time spend working or on Education.
▪For pregnant women and mothers, an improved water supply and proper water storage is essential to protect lives and ensure good health.
