Miras and Millions on BWS Contracts: Mira Saga Continues

The Mira saga continues as new allegations surface involving multimillion-dollar contracts awarded through Belize Water Services Ltd. (BWSL).

Claims being circulated allege that while Keith Mira reportedly sat on the BWSL Board of Directors, companies said to be linked to the Mira family, including FAST Construction Ltd. and FTW Ltd., received major water infrastructure contracts totaling approximately $9.3 million.

The projects reportedly include:

• San Ignacio Water Line – $3.5 million
• Sarteneja Water Project – $2.5 million
• Hopkins Water Project – $1.5 million
• Santa Familia Water Extension – $1.8 million

The allegations have raised questions about a possible conflict of interest and whether proper procedures were followed. As scrutiny grows, many Belizean’s are calling for the Resignation of Minister Mira.

Across the country, Belizeans are witnessing the same troubling pattern: millions of taxpayer dollars are being spent on road projects, yet only months later many of these same roads are already showing signs of deterioration.

The Briceño administration has repeatedly boasted about cutting costs on road construction but those same roads continue to crumble months after millions have been invested, it raises legitimate questions about whether cost-cutting measures are truly benefiting the country, or simply benefiting a selected few.

The Briceño administration proudly claimed it saved millions on the Coastal Highway project. Today, floodwaters have ripped apart sections of the road again and damaged key approaches near Soldier Creek Bridge.

This is what can happen when costs are cut on major infrastructure projects. The real question now is: How many millions will taxpayers have to spend to fix it?

Chances are, the repair bill could end up costing more than the money that was supposedly saved.

CORRUPTION IN THE BRICENO ADMINISTRATION:
1.7 MILL IN GOVERNMENT PAYOUTS LINKED TO MINISTER’S RELATIVE

Leaked financial records reportedly reveal more than $1.7 million in government payments made to a relative of Police minister, raising serious questions about procurement practices, and potential conflicts of interest.

According to the documents, the overwhelming majority of the transactions were kept below the $10,000 threshold, a level that can avoid additional Ministry of Finance scrutiny. The repeated use of smaller payments may have allowed large sums of public funds to be disbursed while remaining outside stricter oversight procedures.

The records have unleashed allegations of nepotism, procurement irregularities, and possible abuse of government spending procedures, with nearly all of the 497 payments reportedly remaining under the $10,000 limit.
