Today, we honour the memory of Good Neighbour Sam Saberi on what would have been his birthday.

Known for his generous spirit, kindness, and unwavering commitment to helping others, Sam left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. To celebrate his legacy, his family made a donation to Welcoming Arms in Sam’s name, continuing the tradition of compassion and giving that meant so much to him.

In recognition of the example Sam set for our community, the Town of Aurora has proclaimed June 3rd as Sam Saberi’s Day of Giving and Generosity.

Today, and every day, we can honour Sam’s memory through simple acts of kindness—a smile, a helping hand, a kind word, or a moment shared with someone who may need it. These small gestures have the power to make a meaningful difference.

May we all carry forward Sam’s spirit of generosity and remind one another that kindness is one of the greatest gifts we can give. 💛

The ABLE Network’s annual walk on May 3rd was nothing short of inspiring! 💙

This year, participants helped raise a record-breaking $100,000 in support of individuals with Intellectual Disabilities, a powerful reminder of what a caring community can accomplish together.

Starting at Aurora Town Square, the streets of downtown Aurora were filled with energy, positivity, and a sea of Able Network’s signature blue shirts proudly declaring: “We Are Able.”

The Able Network is a community-based program dedicated to creating meaningful, inclusive work and recreation opportunities for adults with Intellectual Disabilities in natural job and community settings. Their impact continues to change lives, build confidence, and strengthen our community every single day.

What an incredible celebration of inclusion, empowerment, and community spirit!

Neighbour Media was invited back for the fourth time and was honoured to serve as a judge for the Optimist Oratorical Contest held at the Aurora Soccer Club. Four talented contestants—two from the Newmarket Optimist Club and two from the Aurora Optimist Club —took the stage, sharing powerful speeches on this year’s theme: “The Moment I Realized I Belonged — My Definition of Community.” Ages ranged from 10 to 16, and each speaker brought incredible heart, confidence, and perspective to the room. It was an inspiring morning celebrating the voices of young women finding strength in self-expression and community connection. Since its beginning in 1928, the Optimist International Oratorical Contest has become the longest-running program of its kind, designed to help youth build public speaking skills, confidence, and communication abilities, while also offering the opportunity to compete for college scholarships. We’re proud to have been part of such a meaningful and uplifting event.
