A law firm office manager needs a recurring shredding service. A few years ago, they'd search on Google, open five tabs, and start comparing. Today, they can ask ChatGPT for a recommendation and get three names back—with reasons.

That’s a different kind of competition for shredding companies. It’s not just about who ranks for “shredding near me.” It’s about whether the information online makes it obvious that you offer on-site service, serve their area, work with legal clients, and hold \NAID AAA certification.

A lot of shredding websites say “secure document destruction for businesses of all sizes.” That’s accurate. It’s also not specific enough to help an AI tool—or a buyer—match you to a request like theirs.

The good news: the fixes are mostly things you already know. Clear service pages. Accurate service areas. Real reviews. FAQs that answer what customers actually ask.

Some marketing agencies treat every client the same, regardless of what actually moves the needle.

But for generator dealers, that doesn't work. Demand doesn't build steadily—it spikes the moment a storm knocks out power. A campaign that performs fine in June can miss the moment entirely during a January ice storm.

That's why PAL™ (Predictive Ad Logic) exists: it watches for outages in your service area and turns on Google and Meta ads automatically, so your campaigns are live before the phone starts ringing.

If outage-responsive marketing sounds like something your dealership is missing, let's talk.

Most SEO advice reads like a checklist someone photocopied once upon a time: use keywords, publish content, fix your site speed, get some links, don't forget AI search.

None of it's wrong. It's just handed over as a pile of tasks with no explanation of how they connect—which is exactly why so many business owners nod along and then do none of it.

SEO isn't a checklist. It's four things working together: what your page says, whether search engines can actually reach it, what the rest of the web says about you, and whether your local presence backs it all up. Skip one, and the other three just don't carry as much weight.

Google isn't going anywhere. But it's no longer the only place someone decides which shredding company to call.

More people are asking ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google's own AI Overview a full question before they ever type a search term or visit a website.

That means what shows up about your business outside your own site now matters as much as what's on it. Your NAID certification. Your reviews. Your service area listed the same way everywhere you appear.

The good news? You don't need to rebuild your whole marketing plan overnight. Start smaller: are your certifications and service details accurate everywhere you're listed? Does your site actually answer the questions your intake team hears every week?

Those are the places worth starting.

There's a new marketing acronym going around: AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization.

Here's what you really need to know: it's not a replacement for SEO. It's what happens when your SEO work also has to hold up inside an AI-generated answer, not just a ranked list of links.

For a generator dealer, that shows up in specifics. Does your site explain what size standby generator fits a 2,500-square-foot home? Does it walk through your install process, your service area, your response time during an outage? Those are the details an AI assistant needs to summarize your business accurately—not just find it.

There's no shortcut here. Stuffing a page with generic FAQs or adding "AI" to a title won't do much. What works is the same thing that's always worked: clear service pages, real specifics instead of vague claims, and information about your business that matches everywhere it appears.

If your content already answers what customers ask before they call, you're closer to this than you might think.

The Downtown Orillia BIA connects a lot of things—member businesses, an events calendar, forms, bylaws, community news. And it serves two audiences at once: the businesses who make downtown run, and the public who shows up for it.

Most sites built for a BIA end up serving one side well and leaving the other as an afterthought. We built this one around both from the start. A members' area where businesses have resources at their fingertips. An events calendar the community actually uses. A directory that connects people straight to the business they're looking for.

Underneath all of it: a site that feels like downtown Orillia—vibrant, welcoming, a little eclectic—and just as easy for staff to update as it is for visitors to browse.

The result: one home for a downtown that has a lot going on, as easy to navigate as the district itself.

For starters, we only work with one shredding company per market.

That's not just a policy—it's a strategy. If we're running search campaigns for two shredding providers in the same city, we're bidding against ourselves and diluting both. So once we take on a client, that market closes to other shredding providers.

What that means in practice: your growth isn't capped by what we're also doing for someone down the street. We've taken one-truck operations into full mobile fleets. We've helped established providers push into new markets or hold ground in more competitive ones.

Different starting points. Same focus—marketing built around where your company actually is, and where it's headed.

If exclusivity like that matters to how you think about growth, let's talk.

A homeowner without power doesn't always start a search with "Generator dealer near me" anymore.

More often it's something like: "Who installs Generac standby generators near me and provides ongoing service?"

That's a different question—and AI assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini are the ones answering it, pulling from wherever your dealership shows up online, not just your website.

If your listings are inconsistent across directories, your service pages are thin, or your reviews are scattered, that's the gap that's growing right now.

What actually helps: answer the questions your team already fields on calls, keep your service area and contact details consistent everywhere you're listed, and give people proof—certifications, reviews, completed installs—not just claims.

Rankings still matter. But so does whether an AI assistant has enough to recommend you with confidence.

Shredding is a trust purchase before it's anything else. Someone's handing over sensitive, sometimes regulated, documents to a company they've likely never used before.

Most shredding companies already have this covered on paper: Google reviews, a testimonials page, sometimes both. What often doesn't happen is putting that proof where the hesitation actually lives: next to the pricing, near the contact form, on the page someone's reading in the moment they're deciding whether to call.

A great review three clicks deep does the same job as no review at all.
