Meet Scout. He's my dog and clearly he's a superhero flying over the city. Believable? Not really, but when a superhero dog can look this real, you begin to wonder just how easy it is for fakes to slip into the conversation.
Last week, I attended two 'lunch n learns' about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the impact it can have (for good or for bad) on the public relations/communications profession. It was exciting, interesting and a little scary.
In a matter of seconds, anyone can make content. From writing research papers to creating life-like videos to manipulating voices or even creating a superhero dog. AI is extremely powerful and only getting more powerful every day. But, the secret is to be able to use AI for good, not evil.
Its real power is the ability to spot the fakes, provide research, create a first draft, and answer all kinds of questions, which makes the information it provides a starting point so that you can make better judgement calls. Does a superhero dog flying over the city, really make sense? Of course not.
But, here's the thing - no amount of technology will take away your years of experience. You know what works in real-life and what doesn't. AI simply gets you started and makes your job more efficient. It's a game changer that's here to stay and we need to embrace it.
And honestly? AI technology should give us a bit more peace of mind. As fakes become more convincing, better tools will be developed to spot them and in doing so, we'll be able to provide value, build trust and make real connections with our clients because we'll be able to confidently say whether something is real or not.
And yes...even when the internet hands us a flying superhero dog, like Scout.
