A Mare (also called a Mara) is a sinister supernatural being from Germanic and Scandinavian folklore. It was believed to visit people while they slept, sitting or pressing on their chest, leaving them unable to move while causing terrifying dreams, feelings of suffocation, and overwhelming fear.

Depending on the tradition, the Mare could be described as a female spirit, witch-like being, or shapeshifter that slipped into homes during the night.

Little-known fact: The Mare is the source of the word “nightmare.” The original meaning wasn’t simply a bad dream—the mare was believed to be the actual supernatural creature causing it.
