Here four simple steps to overcome fear which has two meaning; either Forget Everything And Run or Face Everything And Rise. It is all up to us to make the choice whether we run away from it or face it to rise up.
1. Redefine Failure:
We are to redefine what failure means to us. If we define failure as the discrepancy between what we hope to achieve and what we might achieve. Then, we can focus on what we learned which helps us to recalibrate for future challenges and the opportunities in our life.
By framing a situation we are dreading differently before we attempt it, we may be able to avoid some stress and anxiety to overcome our fear of failure.
2. Set approach Goals, NOT avoidance Goals:
Goals can be classified as approach goals or avoidance goals based on whether we are motivated by wanting to achieve a positive outcome or avoid an adverse one.
It is very important to set approach goals instead of avoidance goals. We need to focus on what we want to achieve rather than what we want to avoid.
Psychologists have found that creating approach goals, or positively reframing avoidance goals, is beneficial for well-being. When we are dreading a tough task and expect it to be difficult and unpleasant, we may unconsciously set goals around what we don’t want to happen rather than what we do want.
3. Create a “FEAR” list:
Creating a “FEAR list” can help us to determine what may not happen as a result of our fear which we call, the cost of inaction. Creating a “FEAR list” enable us to tackle some or most of our hardest challenges, resulting in some of our biggest successes.
4. Focus on learning:
The chips aren’t always going to fall where we want them to but if we understand that reality going in, we can be prepared to wring the most value out of the experience, no matter the outcome.
Remember: it’s when we feel comfortable that we should be fearful because it is a sign that we are not stepping far enough out of our comfort zone to take steps that will help us rise and thrive. By rethinking our fears as we focus on learning, we can come to see apprehension as a mentor and guide ourselves to help achieve our most important goals.
So, let us NOT live in FEAR rather ask God’s grace to be able to i) redefine the fear, ii) set a fear approach goals, iii) create a fear list and iv) focus on learning for our growth.
“Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.” - Proverbs 29:25
