Attempts by activists to derail energy investment in Canada undermine an industry capable of delivering major economic and environmental benefits, says Shannon Joseph, chair of Energy for a Secure Future.

Joseph makes her comments tonight on Hannaford, arguing that campaigns attempting (for example) to portray liquefied natural gas projects as health hazards can obscure the tangible benefits energy development has delivered to communities.

This is particularly so of indigenous communities in northern British Columbia.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is telling the Trump administration to “stop doing memes, stop throwing shade and stop trying to be tough” as tensions between Canada and the United States escalate. Carney says trade talks can resume when Washington gets serious about negotiating a deal that respects Canadian sovereignty and protects key Canadian industries.

The comments come after Canada-U.S. trade negotiations broke down, followed by new tariffs and a wave of provocative social media posts from President Donald Trump and other U.S. officials.

“I honestly believe if Mr. Harper were prime minister, we would have had a deal a long time ago.” Thus Yaroslav Baran, speaking on tonight’s Hannaford show.

A Harper-style approach would have treated the relationship as serious business requiring serious management. Instead, we have drifted into a cycle of provocation, retaliation, and political opportunity. The deal is not done because the people responsible for delivering it have been more interested in managing the narrative than closing the file.
