Breaking News: Taliban Bans Internet in Afghanistan

Kabul, Afghanistan – September 29, 2025
The Taliban has announced a nationwide ban on internet access in Afghanistan, cutting millions of citizens off from the digital world.

Officials claim the move is aimed at “protecting national values” and preventing what they describe as the spread of “harmful content.” However, the decision has sparked widespread concern, as Afghans now face new barriers to communication, education, and business.

Human rights groups and international organizations have condemned the ban, warning it will further isolate Afghanistan from the global community and severely impact economic activity, access to information, and humanitarian efforts.

Many Afghans, especially young people, rely heavily on the internet for learning, remote work, and staying connected with family abroad. The sudden blackout has left them frustrated and uncertain about the future.

This development marks one of the most restrictive measures taken since the Taliban’s return to power, raising fears of increasing censorship and control over daily life in the country.

Canadians Are Friendly, Polite, and Respectful — That Was a Big Lie Until I Met and Researched Indigenous Peoples

What I Learned About Respect in Canada

Before moving to Canada, I was often told that Canadians are polite, respectful, and welcoming. I arrived with hope, expecting to be treated with kindness and dignity.

However, in my first year, I experienced something very different. I faced racism, rudeness, and exclusion mostly from individuals in the dominant society, particularly those who benefit from long-standing systems of privilege. It was shocking and painful. The people I had expected to be welcoming often were not.

But then, something changed.

When I began speaking with Indigenous peoples—First Nations, Inuit, and Métis—I felt something I hadn’t felt before: true respect, kindness, and honesty. These communities welcomed me with open hearts and open minds. I saw in them the values I had once believed represented all of Canada: politeness, respect, humility, and community.

This experience helped me realize that the true spirit of kindness and respect in Canada lives deeply in Indigenous communities, not always in the parts of society that claim to represent these values the loudest.

Thank you to the Indigenous peoples of Canada for showing me the true meaning of respect, kindness, and connection. I am deeply grateful.

Refugee rights are human rights. They are not negotiable.

Even as funding drops and needs grow, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency continues to provide shelter, protection and hope to people forced to flee due to war, violence, persecution or disaster.

At a time of record displacement and shrinking support, we can all show solidarity and take action —by challenging harmful narratives, amplifying refugee voices, and donating to support refugee families.

In the lead-up to World Refugee Day, we’re reflecting on moments of hope and connection—like this one, shared by our Toronto Chapter during a visit with an incredible family that were resettled in Canada through our Safe Harbour Resettlement Program.

The highlight of the visit: their five year old daughter's enthusiastic organization of musical chairs and hide and seek!

Every day, Afghan women contact us seeking safety and a chance to live freely. Each story is deeply personal, but each story also shares one powerful truth: every girl deserves to choose her own path and claim her fundamental rights.

With the support of community partners and chapters, Right to Learn has helped 122 at-risk individuals resettle in Canada since the Taliban took power. Through our Safe Harbour Resettlement program, these families were welcomed into safe, supportive communities where women and girls can access education, healthcare, and their fundamental rights.
