If you're shopping for, or designing your own logo, here are some quick tips. When I build a logo for somebody, there are four lenses that I look at it through when I'm designing:
1. The client/business: Company values & culture, like (cheapest, fastest, high-end, enviro-conscious, etc..) as well as the preferences they want me to include.
2. The industry: Most industries have a "look and feel" to them, and deviating too far away from that can make your business look out of touch.
3. The user: How will the viewer interpret the logo? Will it build credibility? Will it be memorable? But also, ask yourself, what will a viewer need to see to feel that this is a trustworthy business?
4. Technical: Something that is easy to read, visible in all mediums and won't cause production issues, say, when being printed, embroidered, etc.. Will viewers understand it if they drive by it on a sign?
Remember, it's all about your client, and creating enough impact to be memorable, otherwise you'll be forgotten in the sea of 2000 logos and other advertisements people see in day.
