How our family trip to Victoria landed me a 17-month contract with one of the most values-aligned organizations I’ve worked with. ⏬⏬

As someone who’s always felt deeply connected to water, I planned a trip to the West Coast with my family in August, wanting to explore Canada’s ocean coastline rather than head abroad. What I didn’t expect was that this would spark a deeper curiosity in my son about our coastline and lead me to (COLC), whose mission now mirrors how I teach him about where he calls home.

In October 2024, the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition (COLC) formally entered the chat, and I joined their amazing team!

I’ve been loving the contract work! I’ve been developing strategy, creating content, and supporting national campaigns like Ocean Week Canada 2025 with an amazing, collaborative team.

As Q1 wraps up, I’m taking a short maternity leave before returning to COLC and Systematic Marketing Solutions in May, ready to pick up where I left off on ocean-focused campaigns and, of course, the broader strategies that light me up.

So, thanks for the check-ins and the recommendations.

So long, 2024!

If you’re here for an overly positive, perfectly curated recap of 2024… this ain't it.

But I will say this: 2024 was one of my best years personally. My family thrived, my mental health thrived, I kept an energetic toddler alive (while growing another!), and I landed an unexpected full-time contract that feels so aligned. 🙏🏾

On top of that, I attended more networking events than ever, connected with some amazing business owners, hired an incredible EA, taught my first webinar at a conference, and made a few big (and scary) business investments. Oh, and I fully embraced my new role as Alberta’s unofficial tour guide for visiting friends and family 😅

But it wasn’t all highs. My marketing business slowed compared to the year before, a paid client ghosted me, and I had some disappointing business transactions (more on buyer’s remorse another time). I also struggled to show up in Q4 and let’s just say it was rough in more ways than one. There were plenty of rejections, assumptions, and all the roller-coaster moments entrepreneurship throws at you.

I’m not rolling into 2025 with big audacious goals. I’m keeping it simple—focused on showing up: one email, post, event, and workout at a time.

Vulnerability post incoming….

As marketers, we’re constantly advising businesses on how to sell their services, how to present themselves confidently, and how to build trust with their audiences. But here’s the truth: it’s not always easy for me to market myself. With all my knowledge, it’s easy to overthink every post, every strategy, and every result.

Sometimes, I struggle when I don’t see the results I want. It’s frustrating, especially when I know I’m following the fundamentals. But even when things don’t fall into place, I remind myself it’s just a matter of time.

Here’s what I always return to:

1️⃣ Strategic Partnerships: I seek out other professionals who serve my ideal clients and collaborate with them to create something bigger for our clients. I’m a big fan of creating superb value through collaboration.

2️⃣ Networking: Pushing my way introverted-natured self to network often. Not just for sales but to become visible in different spaces—tech, agriculture, education—you name it. It’s about being seen and connected.

3️⃣ Consistent Content: Yes, some content will fall flat. But each post is a chance to learn, tweak, and grow. Keep giving value and sharing your work and your expertise.

4️⃣ Accountability: Whether it’s a mastermind, a business coach, or a supportive group, having people keep you motivated and on track is key.

This post is as much a reminder to myself as it is to you: Your next client/contract is just around the corner.

It’s been a while since I’ve felt the Sunday Scaries, and I credit much of that to how I plan my week. Working as a fractional CMO means strategy is everything—methodical and intentional.

I realized early on that I do my best work for clients when I’m organized, and I’ve carried that same mindset into my personal planning. Sundays are all about setting clear intentions for the week, with a predictable routine, but with some wiggle room (because life happens).

So, how do I set myself up for success each week? Here’s what I do (feel free to borrow):

- Family meetings with my husband (non-negotiable).

- Assign weekly tasks to our Executive Assistant.

- Schedule specific days to work on client deliverables.

- Register for one networking event (because showing up matters).

- Plan activities for the toddler—extracurricular, playdates, the whole nine yards.

- Pick two tasks that will actually move the needle forward in both businesses and choose what days I will work on them.

- Accept that change is okay. Life happens, and that’s part of the plan, too.

Still evolving, but this is what works for me. What’s one thing from this list you live by and one thing you’ll try next Sunday? And if you can do this while enjoying some fresh air outside—even better! 🌿
