As I predicted, the most popular image was number one.

And as I mentioned before, what we like to see is still subjective but here are the things that draw us in, universally.

The one, I most personally find beautiful is the Fibonacci spiral or golden spiral. It’s what some of us called, sacred geometry. It’s the spiral shape in many things in nature. Snail shells, flowers and many things microscopic. We are drawn to it because it’s natural and it indicates a sense of life. It works best for us if it lands on a vertical or horizontal axis, rather than an angle.

The second thing that most of us are drawn to, is we like to see shadows drop to the bottom right of images. We also, in our culture, that reads left to right, prefer our light source coming from the left. The shadow on the right side holds our attention as though there is a boundary that keeps us in the image, simply because our eyes are drawn to lighter parts of images.

Some of the other things, you each commented on individually, are also correct. Simply, because that’s what you saw and that’s what worked for you.

This is the beauty of art. As individuals, we bring our own experiences and they shape what we see. Really, it is the viewer who is truly the artist.

If however, you are taking photographs for marketing, some of the more common experiences will give you a greater range of audience. But if you want to be a bit of a wild artist, like some of my more graphic and bold work, you might want to deliberately create discomfort, which I do on purpose. The discomfort makes people stop, question and take another look.

So both techniques can work!

Time to vote!

Six shots, very similar. You will likely be drawn to one over the others though.

Not all will agree but there are some things we are universally drawn to.

I’ll let you know what the majority chooses and then I’ll explain why.

This is part of some upcoming food and product photography education I am developing.

Stay tuned!

If you are interested, PM me. It will help decide if I stay local and live or go virtual. In person is much better for this education so we can also create VanIsle travel worthy workshops.

Well damn! So grateful!

"I’m excited to let you know that you have been selected for Giggster’s "Top Food Photographers" list of 2021. Our team has searched for the best of the best food photographers in Victoria to share with our customers, and your work landed at the top of the list."

I made my move just over 8 months ago and this showed up in my email today.

And I get to share the spotlight with the incredible Greg Samborski, the talented guy who shot my YogaMA photos. How cool is that?

I’m grateful to shoot what I love!

That’s why my clients always get a little extra.

They ask for stills and then I often add short videos-for them. For me. For FUN!

I believe there should be play in our work and this is one way I play!

I almost forgot I was interviewed for this publication! Fun!

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sandy Weatherall and we've shared our conversation below. Hi Sandy, how do you think about risk? Outside of my business, I'm a skydiver. I was in the sport of skydiving about three years when I had an opportunity to take my desire to move into food p

With all of my crossover promotion of you might be wondering if I’m still a food photographer.

The answer is a resounding “yes” and I still love it.

I had the joy of shooting chocolate all day. Hey, it’s Easter-why not?

These are a few faves from coffee

You must try these! I could have easily overindulged today as I had to take a bite out for many shots.

The flavours are distinct, yet subtle and the chocolate is smooth. Something for a special, high end, high quality treat.

Our Story

When I was in school, I photographed bread from the local Italian Bakery. Fresh; the aroma rewarmed under the studio lights, drew fellow students to pop their heads in to see what I was shooting. They hovered around, waiting for me to finish so they could eat. We shared bread when I was done. Grateful, hungry students and friends came together.

This is the power of food.

Food is about bringing people together. The creators of food add a part of themselves and not only nourish others but add a little soul to what they put out there. For every bite of food we take, there is a story behind it. Whether a home cooked meal or that meal that gets us through a busy day, it started with someone’s idea and heart.

For me, food is not only something we eat, but creating food photos is a form of art. It’s still life. Making the sets and props and using the right lighting to bring it all together makes me so very happy.
