Jordan joined a lineup of local creative leaders to talk about something we are passionate about at ANVL — the power of branding for small businesses.
Because in a world full of competition and noise, great branding is your equalizer. It’s what helps small businesses stand out, connect deeply, and scale sustainably.

We got a bit nostalgic going through some our of favourite branding projects of the last couple of years so we thought we’d share them, starting with this one!

When one of Edmonton’s longest-standing restaurant groups decided to go all-in on their cooking class program, they knew it needed to stand on its own.

They came to us with a name and a clear ask: create a brand system and website that could live independently, generate bookings, and connect with a younger, experience-driven audience. Having worked together for almost a decade, we had the context. Now we just needed the spark.

The name YEG Cooking Classes did its job: clear, descriptive, to the point. But it didn’t feel like anything yet. It didn’t capture what makes these classes so compelling—the sense of connection, creativity, and genuine joy that comes with cooking. So that’s where we started.

We built a flexible, vibrant brand system designed to evoke emotion without losing clarity. The visual language uses a modular tile system that can be re-skinned, recoloured, and rearranged to reflect everything from seasonal themes to ingredient types to event formats. It’s bright, expressive, and just a little unexpected. Most importantly, it aligns seamlessly with the Sorrentino’s parent brand, while confidently standing on its own.

The result? A brand with personality, presence, and room to grow—built to attract a new audience without losing the credibility of its legacy.

If your brand walked into a room, would it turn heads, or just take up space?
Great brands are magnetic.
They’ve got rizz—that undeniable charisma that makes them unforgettable.
Not because of what they sell, but because of what they stand for.
Think about it:
• Coca-Cola isn't just a drink. It's happiness in a bottle.
• Apple doesn’t just sell tech. It sells creativity, rebellion, and genius.
• Nike? Not shoes. Strength. Willpower. Victory.
The best brands live rent-free in our minds because they represent an idea, not just a product or service.
So ask yourself this:
👉 Can you boil your brand down to one powerful idea?
It shouldn’t be “quality service” (everyone says that).
It should be something more primal. More human.
Maybe it’s grit.
Maybe it’s legacy.
Maybe it’s luxury without compromise.
Whatever it is, that idea becomes your brand strategy.
How you express it becomes your tactics.
Your logo? That’s what it looks like—a picture of your belief system.

That’s branding.

This gem of a quote comes from Jerry Seinfeld's dad, who was in the sign-making business. And let's be real-it still holds up today.

If you're not actively putting your brand out there, you're making it way harder for your business to thrive. Marketing isn't just an expense; it's an investment. It's the difference between being a well-kept secret and being the go-to name in your industry.

And let's face it—if there's one thing we’ve learned from my years obsessing over Seinfeld, it's that people remember what stands out. (The Soup N**i? Man-Hands? The double-dip controversy?)
Branding and marketing work the same way. You have to be strategic, consistent, and-most importantly-unforgettable.
