⚠️ BEFORE INSTALLING A BUSINESS SIGN, ASK ABOUT THE PERMIT.
A sign is an investment in your business—but the sign itself is only one part of the project.
In Edmonton, signs installed on private property generally require a sign permit unless they qualify for a specific exemption. If a sign has an electrical connection, an electrical permit may also be required.
Why is this important?
Sometimes one sign quote appears much cheaper than another because permit preparation, municipal fees, drawings, engineering or electrical coordination have not been included.
If these requirements are not clearly discussed, a customer may believe they are comparing the same service when they are not.
Before accepting a sign quote, ask:
✅ Does this sign require a permit?
✅ Is permit preparation included in the quote?
✅ Are municipal permit fees included or separate?
✅ Who will submit the application?
✅ Will I receive confirmation of approval?
✅ Is professional engineering required?
✅ Does an illuminated sign require an electrical permit?
✅ Will installation begin only after the required approvals are issued?
Installing a sign without the required approval can lead to enforcement action, fines, modifications, removal, delays and unexpected expenses. Depending on the circumstances, the property owner, business operator, permit applicant or another responsible party may be contacted regarding the violation.
A responsible sign process should be transparent from the beginning.
At New Dawn Signs and Printing Ltd., we believe customers deserve to know:
• What their quotation includes
• Which permits may be required
• Who is responsible for applying
• Whether engineering or electrical work is required
• What must be approved before installation begins
A lower initial price may not be a better price if important requirements have been left out.
Protect your investment. Ask questions. Request documentation. Make sure the complete scope is in writing.
📍Permit requirements vary by municipality, property, zoning, sign type, size and installation method. Always confirm the requirements for your specific location.
