Edmonton News Update 🚨
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has started a new pilot project using body-worn cameras with AI-powered facial recognition. These cameras scan people in real-time against a “high-risk” watch list, aiming to identify individuals during police operations.

But the move is already facing criticism:

🔍 Privacy concerns — How is the watch list created? Who gets scanned?
⚖️ Bias fears — Facial-recognition tech has a history of misidentifying people, especially racialized groups.
🕵️ Lack of transparency — Civil rights advocates want clearer rules and public oversight.
📢 Community reaction — Some support increased tech for safety, others fear over-surveillance.

Should AI-powered police tech be used in Edmonton?

Edmonton homeowners could see a 6.4% property tax increase in the next city budget.
Rising costs, infrastructure pressures, and population growth are major drivers behind the projected hike.

📌 Why it matters:
• Impacts nearly every household in the city
• Could mean higher yearly expenses for homeowners
• Reflects growing pressure on city services and infrastructure

City Council will review and debate budget adjustments in the coming weeks. More details coming soon.

📉 Alberta Rejects Minimum Wage Increase Bill

Alberta’s government has officially voted down a bill that would have raised the minimum wage, meaning the current wage freeze will continue.

This decision comes at a time when many workers are struggling with rising costs, sparking major discussion about affordability, labour policy, and the province’s economic direction.

🔍 Why this matters:

Impacts thousands of low-income workers across Alberta

Signals the government’s stance on wage and affordability policy

Could influence future labour, business, and economic debates

🗳️ Key Date:
Bill rejected on November 17, 2025

What’s your take — should Alberta increase the minimum wage or keep it frozen?

📍 Edmonton Traffic Deaths Reach Highest Level Since 2016 — What’s Going On? 🚨

Edmonton is facing a serious road-safety crisis.

According to the Edmonton Police Service, 29 people have already died in traffic collisions this year — the highest number our city has seen in nearly a decade.

Even more heartbreaking:
10 of those victims were pedestrians.

EPS says several factors are driving the spike:
⚠️ Speeding
⚠️ Distracted driving (phones)
⚠️ Aggressive behaviour on the road
⚠️ Reduced driver awareness
⚠️ Poor visibility during fall/winter months

This is a reminder for all of us:
👉 Slow down
👉 Put the phone away
👉 Watch crosswalks
👉 Give pedestrians space
👉 Drive like every life on the road matters

Stay safe, Edmonton. ❤️
Let’s bring these numbers down — together.

At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month — we pause to remember. 🌺
Today, we honour the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom, and those who continue to serve with courage and dedication.

The poppy reminds us not only of the fallen, but of our shared duty to keep their memory alive.
Let’s take a moment of silence to reflect, to remember, and to be grateful.

🌳 Edmonton’s Brand-New Downtown Oasis: O-day’min Park Opens!

Downtown Edmonton just got a major glow-up! The long-awaited O-day’min Park (formerly Warehouse Park) officially opened on November 7, transforming an old gravel lot into a vibrant green space designed to revitalize the city’s core.

The park sits right in the heart of downtown and represents one of Edmonton’s biggest urban renewal projects in recent years. It’s not just a park — it’s a community space meant to bring life, families, and local energy back to the city center.

City officials say O-day’min Park will be a year-round destination, offering green escape in summer and snowy recreation in winter.

⚠️ Edmonton Concert Incident Raises Safety Concerns

An Edmonton woman says she was drugged at a concert inside Rogers Place while attending with her mother. What started as a fun night quickly turned into a medical emergency — she collapsed, stopped breathing, and was later revived by paramedics.

Doctors believe her drink may have been spiked with GHB (a common “date-rape” drug) mixed with M**A, causing a near-fatal reaction.

Now recovering, the nursing student says her life has been changed forever — she struggles to walk short distances and is speaking out to warn others.

Authorities urge everyone to:
🚫 Never leave drinks unattended.
👀 Watch out for friends and others around you.
📢 Report suspicious behaviour immediately.

Rogers Place and the Edmonton Police Service have both confirmed the case is under investigation.

⚕️ Alberta Health-Care Workers Vote 98% in Favour of Strike

Tensions are escalating in Alberta’s health-care system. The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) has confirmed that over 16,000 Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Health-Care Aides have voted 98% in favour of a province-wide strike.

💬 The union says the overwhelming vote reflects years of frustration over:

Stagnant wages despite record inflation and rising living costs.

Severe staff shortages leading to burnout and unsafe workloads.

Workplace safety issues — with some facilities chronically short-staffed.

If the strike moves forward, it could impact hospitals, long-term care homes, and community health facilities across Alberta — from Edmonton to Calgary and beyond.

AUPE president Guy Smith said members are “done being ignored,” urging the government to return to the bargaining table with a fair offer.

📍 This comes amid an already strained health-care system, where emergency rooms and hospitals are operating over capacity, with many calling it a “breaking point” for Alberta’s front-line workers.

Do you think Alberta’s government will act before a strike begins?

📢 Alberta Expands Its Global Footprint!
Alberta has officially opened a new international office in Abu Dhabi 🇦🇪, located inside the Canadian Embassy.

🌍 The goal? To strengthen trade, investment, and energy partnerships across the Middle East and North Africa.
From oil & gas to clean tech, AI, agriculture, and manufacturing, this office will help Alberta companies grow abroad while attracting new investors and innovations back home.

💼 With this, Alberta now operates 18 international offices worldwide, showcasing its ambition to connect, collaborate, and compete on the global stage.

🔗 Why it matters:
This expansion opens new doors for Alberta’s businesses, investors, and entrepreneurs to reach one of the world’s fastest-growing economic regions — building bridges between Canada and the UAE for a stronger, more diversified future.
