Client Spotlight: Mission Aviation Fellowship Canada

Behind every headline is a human story...

When the Ebola outbreak spread through the Democratic Republic of the Congo, much of the world saw statistics, public health updates, and news reports about the crisis.

What many didn't see were the individuals whose lives were being changed because of it.

A recent National Post article tells one of those stories, highlighting how a Canadian pilot serving with Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) Canada helped evacuate the family of a doctor infected with Ebola.

It's a touching example of the critical role humanitarian aviation plays in some of the world's most remote communities, connecting people to medical care, emergency assistance, and hope when they need it most.

At Graf-Martin, we're continually reminded that the stories that resonate most deeply are the ones that help us see the people behind the issue.

This National Post feature does exactly that.

At Graf-Martin, we’ve spent nearly two decades helping organizations communicate with clarity, build trust and deepen engagement.

And one thing we’ve learned: many organizational challenges that appear to be fundraising issues are often rooted in a lack of clarity.

When staff, volunteers, board members and donors all share a common understanding of an organization’s mission and impact, it becomes easier to navigate change, respond to challenges and inspire generosity.

That's one of the topics our Founder & President, Ellen Graf-Martin, recently explored on the CAUSE Leadership Podcast.

The conversation touched on:
• Why brands should shape culture before it shapes perception
• The difference between cultivating donors and building a community
• How to prepare for a crisis before it happens
• What organizations often overlook during leadership transitions
• Practical ways to build trust with supporters and stakeholders

One takeaway we love:

"Clarity on mission and brand unites the team."

How easy are you making it for the people who already care about your mission to actually support it? Because for many donors in this moment, the barrier usually isn’t interest, it’s trust.

Most potential donors aren’t questioning whether your cause matters. Instead, they’re asking questions like: Does this organization clearly understand the problem, not just emotionally, but truthfully? Are they actually best positioned to respond to it? Do they operate with enough transparency and accountability that I can trust how funds are used? And if I give, will I ever really see what changed because of it?

The organizations building durable support are the ones reducing that uncertainty. They don’t just make giving easy, they make trust easy by clearly defining the problem, their role in solving it, how they steward resources, and what impact looks like in real terms. In this environment, people don’t need more reasons to care. They need fewer reasons to hesitate.

The most important communication you can send to your donors is a simple thank you. Not followed by an update that leads to another ask. Just genuine recognition and thankfulness for their support.

A thank-you-only moment builds trust, deepens connection, and gives people space to feel the impact of what they've made possible. Before launching your next campaign, consider this question: when was the last time you reached out specifically to thank your donors without asking for anything else?

If you'd like support developing a donor engagement plan rooted in donor acknowledgement and gratitude, we'd be happy to help. Book a Discovery Call with us.

As donor acquisition becomes more expensive and public trust more fragile, donor acquisition alone is no longer the clearest measure of long-term fundraising strength.

Recent Fundraising Effectiveness Project data shows that repeat-retained donors remain the most stable segment of the donor base, even as overall retention continues to face pressure. That’s where strong monthly giving programs matter most, not just as recurring revenue streams, but as systems that strengthen retention, affinity, and long-term growth.

Swipe through for a quick Donor Durability Assessment Framework designed to help identify hidden retention bottlenecks and translate long-term vision into clearer, trackable metrics.

Think about one of your most loyal donors. They’ve been supporting you for years. Then, one day, they stop giving. What happens next?

In most organizations, a system takes over. The donor is tagged as lapsed, funneled into an automated sequence, and receives a generic email asking them to return. To the donor, it feels like being reduced to a data point after a decade of support. The result? They don’t just stop giving; they stop advocating for you.

In this month's blog post, Ellen Graf-Martin shares a personal account of being on the receiving end of an impersonal automated campaign and contrasts it with a simple, human-centric approach that actually saved a relationship.
