Hello Fort Sask!
I'm hoping to pick the brain of you all about an idea I've had for some time. I see that a huge portion of Fort Informed posts revolve around questions like "Who in town does ___" or "Is there anyone who can ___?" and so on. I also see a huge push, and rightly so, for shopping and supporting local. I'd like to look into addressing both of these. I feel like there are so many amazing local and in-home businesses that many of us simply do not know about. I want to do my part to help support and promote local, especially during these difficult times! Please allow me to explain...
I want to create a "Shop Local - Fort Sask" website hub, which contains all of the local merchants and service providers in Fort Sask and the surrounding area. The vision I have is a website where different categories of services and merchants are sorted out for easy access. Each participating business would get a few lines to describe what they do/offer, the opportunity to feature a few photos of their work and their contact information and whatever else they would like to share. This way, instead of asking, for example, "Who can make me this cake in town?" you could go to the website, under "Baking" and see all of the local bakers with examples of their work. Guess what? I built a skeleton for this website already to give you an idea of what it would look like. I'm hosting it temporarily for free right now but I will purchase a more professional domain if the community likes and supports this idea. I'll put the link at the end of this post.
If this was a success, it could grow to potentially include monthly newsletters for local promotions/events/discounts/deals, a custom built app (accessible on all devices/operating system) or to highlight local businesses each week. I would also like to promote different events going on in the city as well because I also see a lot of posts such as, "When is Trunk or Treat?" and things like that. Just some ideas as of now.
Each participating business would need to pay a small monthly fee to be on the website, so that I can buy the website domain, web hosting services, finish the website, graphic work, monthly maintenance and updating and so on.
Anyway, before I go any further, I've created a small and quick, 7 question "click and collect" survey to see if there is interest in this idea. If there is, I would start on the project right away and see where it goes.
Thanks a lot, I look forward to the feedback to see if this is a go or not.
