It’s been a while, but I’m back at my mini series with a little tip to help you improve your website’s usability and SEO, and (consciously or subconsciously) gain your audience’s trust.
A favicon.
Okay let’s back up a bit, because you might be asking “What on earth is a favicon?” and you’re not alone. I get puzzled faces often when the topic comes up. Allow me to clear it up for you. A favicon is the symbol or icon you see next to a website’s title in the browser window. It also appears in a list of bookmarks, history, and search bar recommendations (➡️ swipe for examples).
While favicons don’t have a direct impact on SEO (search engine optimization), they DO affect the usability of your site... and usability affects your SEO! To put it in perspective: favicons make it easier for people to browse your site. In a window with many tabs open (I know I’m not the only one!), they help users locate your site. They do the same thing in a list of bookmarks, history, or search bar recommendations. When people can more easily identify and spend time on your website, they are more likely to do it! And search engines favour sites that people actually use.
Have I convinced you? Good! Now how do we go about correcting that missing favicon? That’s where your brand identity comes in. My brand package includes a collection of submarks that you can select a favicon from! Because they display at only 16x16px, you’ll want to choose one that is simple like a monogram or symbol. Avoid anything complex or with text as it won’t be legible at this size. Upload it in your site’s settings and you’ve made a great step towards improving your sites usability and SEO!
