My latest cartographic work of art has been finally installed!

This map was designed to showcase and promote cycling in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley, the Town of Wolfville and the Landscape of Grand Pré. In my past-life I was a fanatical cyclist for many decades, I gave up my driver's license in 1992 riding my bike for 15 years in Vancouver, I rode Mountain Bikes, Road Bikes, raced in the Cheakamus Challenge Mountain Bike race from Squamish to Whistler, The Alley Cats Scramble (an international bike courier race that took place in Vancouver and Toronto) I even owned a custom built 63 speed RANS V-Rex Recumbent bike and clocked in a whopping 104 kilometres an hour on a very steep and long hill on Galiano Island! So, this map is my gift to the cycling community.

The map is designed for a full range of cyclists, from the beginner to the Gearhead. For the serious cyclist there are 8 long-distance cycling routes ranging from 25 to 87 kilometres, all starting and ending at the Rec Hub in Wolfville. Each route has a custom profile which includes detailed route information like minimum/maximum elevation, elevation gain/loss, maximum uphill/downhill slope, and a percentage breakdown of paved and gravel roads. The routes were derived from Adam Barnett's book “Where to Cycle in Nova Scotia”, I designed 38 detailed maps for this book back in 2019. The routes were further tweaked and refined with the help of Colin Banks (Banks Bikes), Brian Adams and Jen Jones (We’re Outside Outdoor Outfitters) and Luke Moffatt (Town of Wolfville). So a big thank-you to all of those contributors.

Designing this map was a technical and logistical nightmare and took over 350 hours to complete. The main map spans 4 panels and is 13 feet wide and almost 6 feet tall, the map was designed and rendered as one massive 12 gigabyte image which is comprised of LiDAR and high resolution ortho imagery, even with 80 gigabytes of ram the renders crashed my computer numerous times. Once all the content was placed, the map was split into 4 tiles where even more detail was added.

The 6th panel is a detailed map of Wolfville showing local bike routes, parks and trails. The final map is the Landscape of Grand Pré, this map is a reduced version of a very large map that will be installed at the Grand-Pré National Historic Site sometime this summer.... stay tuned for that one!

Hot off the press.... The 2026-27 Avon River Arts & Culture Guide.

This year’s cover artwork has a quilted effect; the hypsometric elevation bands and the Avon River look as if they have been hand stitched.

Thanks to Tacha Reed for making this project go so smoothly.

My latest Cartographic work of art will soon be installed at the Wolfville Recreation Hub which officially opens on May 13th.

This map is 20 feet wide by 6 feet tall, not that biggest map I have worked on but by far the most complex. Once installed a custom floater frame will be added..... stay tuned!

Today's Sentinel-2/LiDAR mashup... Glacial Erratics.

This map shows the distribution of Glacial Erratics (white dots) in and around Kejimkujik National Park. Glacial Erratics are large granite boulders deposited throughout the landscape by retreating ice sheets thousands of years ago. Using a hillshading model derived from LiDAR I could clearly see these large boulders, showing up as bumps in a relatively flat landscape, in total I digitized 2, 234 erratics.

The map also shows 2 Eskers, the southern esker is over 31 kilometres in length. Eskers are formed by the deposition of sediment at the bottom of ice-walled channels within or beneath a former glacier. As a glacier retreats, the channel walls melt while the accumulated sediment remains, slumping into ridges as the only remaining evidence of the former channel path.

A cool aerial perspective of Halifax Harbour.

This image was created with Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and a Blender rendered hillshading image derived from LiDAR. The perspective view was generated using Aerialod 3D rendering software.

This map shows all Crown Land in Nova Scotia along with National, Provincial Parks and Protected Areas. Overlaid over all of this are all clearcuts on Crown Land as of March 2026, other clearcuts are derived from the Provincial Forest Cover from 2021.

Here is a revised version of the forests of Nova Scotia map I created 5 years ago, I tweaked a few colours and added the provincial Crown Land clearcut data (Crown Land Harvest Plans), this does not include private woodlots and historical clearcuts.

March 21 is the International Day of Forests, a day to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests. I generated this map using the provincial forestry data set, the forest has been broken down into 3 major forest groupings which are based of Leading Species: Softwood (pine, spruce, hemlock, etc.) Hardwood (maple, ash, oak, birch etc.) and Mixedwood which is a combination of both. The purple/blue represents Urban/Agriculture which contrasts well with the forest cover.
