Creating a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Report requires honest dialogue. Throughout the process, we listen carefully and ask lots of questions. We also consult with external partners, communities, and Indigenous advisors to get a clear picture of what is working well and where the organization might require additional support.

Reconciliation isn't a fixed end point, it's an ongoing responsibility that requires an open line of communication. Welcome back to our Biinaagami video series! In Part 1, DDP Design Lead Jennica discussed the listening phase. Part 2 covered design. Today, we're looking at the results of this project and measuring the impact.

Our goal for the Biinaagami project was to create a unique brand and website that could build support for Biinaagami among local communities and beyond. Swim Drink Fish Canada and Canadian Geographic have seen a very positive response to this project, with lots of engagement from communities, schools, and local youth groups. This project has also won several awards, including four Digital Publishing Awards and National Magazine Awards 🏆

A member of the Biinaagami team also recreated the logo as a beaded medallion. Kenhtè:ke Spirit Beads used glass beads and deer hide to create this medallion. Beadwork plays an important role in many Indigenous communities, and it was a great honour to see our logo design represented in this way.

Welcome back to our Biinaagami video series! In part 1, DDP Design Lead Jennica broke down the listening phase of this project. Today, she's chatting all things design.

After our consultations with the project partners, we created two Biinaagami logo concepts and pitched them to the client. The design they chose features a raven and sturgeon circling a pool, emphasizing that all living things depend on the water. The other branding elements follow this water theme in different shades of blue and white to echo the beauty of the Great Lakes.

We also developed a brand guide for the organization and their partners to ensure that fonts, colours, and graphic elements are used consistently across print and web platforms.

If you've been enjoying the Great Lakes this summer, you can thank Swim Drink Fish Canada and the Biinaagami project 🌊

In 2022, we worked with Swim Drink Fish and Canadian Geographic to design a new website for Biinaagami, an initiative rooted in Indigenous knowledge that aims to protecting the lands and waters within the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence watershed.

Today, DDP Design Lead Jennica is breaking down phase 1 of this project: listening. Our team traveled to Ottawa to meet with all the teams involved in the project. We also met with Patrick Madahbee, who co-chairs the Biinaagami Shared Circle. Patrick and Jennica are both members of Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation, and it was so special to get to collaborate in this capacity.

DDP Co-CEO Jenn Taback spoke to Fireside Chats about the importance of having a strong community, especially when running an Indigenous-and women-owned design firm outside of a major urban centre.

Entrepreneurs need to surround themselves with mentors and role models. There were few Indigenous women designers when Jenn was starting her design career, so she is committed to being a visible member of the industry for the next generation of marginalized designers who need to see themselves reflected in leadership roles.

We're so proud of the work we did with Indigenous Youth Roots - IYR last year!

After 15 years in operation under another name, we led the Indigenous Youth Roots (IYR) team through a comprehensive rebrand, which included consulting on a new name, developing a visual identity and brand guide, and designing a brand-new website to match the organization’s evolved spirit. The branding project was shaped by community voices and the renaming process followed traditional Indigenous protocols that prioritized culture and ancestry at every stage.

Our plan for this project created space for Indigenous youth to define how they are represented in national conversations. By reframing branding as a cultural responsibility, we were able to honour protocol, deepen relationships, and support the self-determined futures of Indigenous youth. Swipe ➡️ to see more!
