Meggan recently shared her approach to accessibility work at RGD's In-House Design Conference: "We need to meet people where they're at."

This approach is at the heart of our accessibility work. With every project, we start by learning about the audience, their needs, and how they currently do things. We never come in with preconceived notions or pre-built solutions, because we know that doesn't work. Building a strong relationship with the client and their community allows us to create work that is genuinely inclusive instead of merely compliant with laws and guidelines.

Thank you to RGD for providing us with this video 🎥

Biinaagami is a program to heal and protect the Great Lakes watershed. We created a unique brand and website to support their efforts and help raise awareness around this important work.

Typically, our brand design work flows from the logo. Our Biinaagami logo design features a raven and sturgeon circling a pool, emphasizing that all living things depend on the water. The brand suite follows the water theme in different shades of blue and white to echo the beauty of the Great Lakes.

We also created a brand-new interactive website to highlight Biinaagami's activities. Visitors to the website can experience the sensations of the lake through embedded video, rippling animations, and sounds of running water. This multimedia approach creates a deep connection with visitors and supports the growth of their community network. To see more of this project, visit Biinaagami

We had a great time at the Rural & Northern Healthcare Leadership Conference in Toronto last week!

Meggan presented her session, “Respectful Communications: Applying the Indigenous Communications Toolkit.” This workshop generated lots of discussion around prioritizing cultural respect and collaboration in design and communications. The conversations continued at our booth, where we got to showcase our Indigenous Communications Toolkit in more detail and chat about how attendees could implement these learnings in different rural and northern healthcare settings.

Thank you to Spark Conferences Inc. for putting on this important event!

Happy Pride Season!

Pride is a celebration and a time to honour our 2SLGBTQI+ communities and allies across Canada, but it's also a protest. Pride began as a series of large-scale demonstrations for basic human rights in the 1970s, a fight that continues to this day. This is a time to celebrate and stand proudly alongside anyone who is fighting to guarantee equal rights for trans and gender-diverse people.

What can we do to help advance 2SLGBTQI+ rights? Understand the history of Pride, be visible in your support at work and in your community, and look for opportunities to support 2SLGBTQI+ businesses and related organizations. Every little bit contributes to creating an open and welcoming environment for everyone. 🌈

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada. This is a time to honour the stories, achievements and resilience of the 600+ First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities in Canada and look for ways to move forward on Reconciliation. Here are 3 things you can do to make a difference:

- Consider how written hiring policies may be creating a barrier to entry
- Review common workplace language to ensure that your communications respect individual Indigenous identities
- Use inclusive alternatives to everyday phrases that perpetuate harm, even unintentionally

We created the Design de Plume Indigenous Communications Toolkit to help folks shift away from feeling frozen and turn good intentions into meaningful action. The ICT includes a series of reflections and exercises to help you learn concrete skills and improve communications of all kinds, including policies, social content, marketing, and daily emails. It’s Design de Plume’s 17th anniversary! 🥳

Every year, we celebrate this milestone with a lot of pride mixed with a tiny bit of shock. When we launched this business after college in the middle of the 2009 recession, the path ahead wasn't always clear, and maybe that was a good thing; had we known what we were getting into, we might not have kept going!

Over the years, we have brought together an amazing team of talented people who care deeply about making a difference. We also want to thank our partners and clients who have supported this journey. We’re building something truly incredible together and we can't wait to see what the next 17 years have in store.

Swipe ➡️ for a lightning round with our co-CEOs, Meggan and Jenn. Thank you, miigwech and here’s to many more!

The DDP team was honoured to be invited by Ontario Northland to the unveiling of Dan Commanda’s artwork that was commissioned for the soon to be launched Northlander Train.

Jennica from our team attended the event, which brought people together to honour the relationships, guidance, and feedback shared by Indigenous communities and Indigenous-led organizations throughout the return of the Northlander. The gathering included prayer, a land acknowledgement, a travelling song and ceremony led by Perry McLeod-Shabogesic, a smudging of the equipment, a tour of the new train, a feast, and the unveiling of the commissioned artwork by Dan Commanda that will be displayed inside the North Bay station. Dan also played us a song, shared teachings, and spoke about the meaning behind his artwork.

The new Northlander train is set to launch later this year, and it was really special to see it in person and be part of this meaningful day!

With National Indigenous History Month in just a few days, it's a good time for this reminder: if you're relying on generic content bundles instead of amplifying Indigenous voices, you might be doing more harm than good.

For Indigenous communities, institutional and public-facing communications have historically been tools of exclusion and misrepresentation. Preset images and messaging created by non-Indigenous entities can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and tropes that totally disregard the vastly diverse experience of Indigeneity.

This year, observe NIHM by making space for Indigenous voices to tell their own stories:
- Hire Indigenous artists and let them create meaningful work
- Amplify Indigenous voices on social media
- Share content from trusted community sources
- Add NIHM content creation to your budget for next year

Remember: Before you hit the download button on an NIHM image bundle, stop to consider who created it and why. If it doesn't come from an Indigenous source, use something else.

To connect with trusted community sources, reach out to your local Friendship Centres, local Indigenous Associations, and local advocacy organizations. See National Association of Friendship Centres for more information.
