OTTAWA — The federal government is expected to introduce long-awaited online safety legislation this week, including a proposed ban that would prevent children under the age of 16 from accessing social media platforms.

According to a government official who spoke on background, the legislation will establish a new regulatory framework aimed at addressing harmful online content and improving digital safety for Canadians.

The proposed law would also create a pathway for social media companies to seek exemptions from the under-16 ban. To qualify, platforms would need to demonstrate that they have effective measures in place to protect young users and provide a safe online environment for children and teenagers.

The legislation is expected to be a key part of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s broader effort to strengthen online safety and hold digital platforms accountable for the content and experiences they provide.
