Can I tell you the thing that I see tripping business owners up the most when it comes to social media?
They have ALL the tactics! And zero themes.
This hamster wheel feeling comes from listening to people on social media talk over and over about how to be successful online but they're sharing tactics, and without the themes to back them up, you're just posting randomly, hoping something sticks.
A tactic, which is what we cover every week in The Social Media Minute Newsletter, is the "what to do today" stuff. Film a quick video. Update your bio. Comment on five posts in your community.
But a theme is different. A theme is what your business actually talks about online regularly. It's the categories of stuff you post about regularly. For example, a boutique inn might have themes like the guest experience, the local area, behind-the-scenes of running the property, and the story of the people who built it. A boutique clothing store might have new arrivals, how to style what they carry, and the faces behind the shop.
Themes don't change every week, while tactics change all the time!
When you only have tactics, your content ends up feeling all over the place. A sale post. A random quote. A selfie. A product photo. It's not like it's wrong, but it's not working for you.
When you have themes, every tactic you use has somewhere to fit. You're not starting from scratch EVERY time you open Instagram.
The first step to making social media actually work for your business is knowing what you're supposed to be talking about. That's it!
That's what we're talking about in this week's Social Media Minute: Why Your Social Media Needs Themes (And How to Figure Out Yours)
