It’s .918 day in the community! Today set in (very clean) 18pt Univers lead type.

We’ve always had a passion for letterpress printing and love to recognize September 18th (9 18) as Type High Day. But why?

Wood and lead type used on a press bed in North America is exactly 0.918 inches high. This allows the set up of ink rollers, the press bed, and paper to work together to lightly touch the paper to make enough of an impression for the ink to transfer to the paper. This allowed letterpress printers, type foundries, and press manufacturers to work with the same standard. Even being different by a few thousandths an inch can be a big headache for press operators!

This exhibition features a selection of wood type prints created for the artist book Literarum Ex Arbori-bus: An Exuberant Showing of the at . Wonderful presentation and the scale of the pages was great to see in person. The show is on until December 4th!
