October is Small Business Month. The poster version is “shop local.” The useful version is quieter.

If you already like a business in this town, leave the review, send the text, share the story with one sentence of your own.

That is how the next customer finds them when you are not in the store.

Owners: put the review link in your phone and ask before they hit the parking lot.

Tag an owner who needs this.

1,000 people are about to land on 3rd Avenue. If you own a business in High River, you still have time.

Heartland Season 20 world premiere is tonight. Doors at 5. Screening at 7. Sold out. Crowds are already coming in.
What to do now:

1. Story. Film 10 seconds of prep. Kitchen, specials board, window, staff. Pin the location.
2. Feed post. One photo. Say you’re open, until when, and what’s on tonight.
3. Google Business Profile. Post an update with a photo, and set today’s hours. That’s what shows on Maps when someone searches “open now.”
4. Hours everywhere. Door, Google, story, feed. If you’re open later for dinner or coffee, say the time.
5. Tonight only. Restaurants: one drink and one plate, with the price. Retail: one thing a visitor can grab in five minutes.

Restaurants and cafes, also do this:

- Last seating and walk-in vs reservation. People will not guess.
- A premiere special on the board outside, not only on your phone.
- Photo of the actual plate or drink. Not the logo.
- After 9, post what’s still open. That’s the second wave.

Retail, also do this:

- Window sign: open late, and until when.
- Photo of the gift, local product, or small thing someone buys on the way past.
- A simple bundle if you have one. Don’t invent a sale you can’t ring through.

Use the words people are already searching: Heartland, High River, downtown.

Showing up on your own page is how they find you once they’re already on the street.

High River neighbours —

On Oct. 21, I’m teaching a free morning session with the Chamber for Small Business Week.

One hour. Plain language.
How your neighbours actually find you online — and what you can fix yourself this week.

8 a.m. Coffee’s on. 15 seats.

Starbucks did not hand the phone to the youngest person on the floor and hope.

Baristas were already filming. In 2024 Starbucks made it a program. This summer they added the brief: what to post, and what never to post.

Because a behind-the-scenes to Gen Z can be a dirty, messy station to the regular watching.

Most small shops already have the first half. A server, a cashier, the person who “gets TikTok.”

What they usually do not have is the page that tells that person how this business should look.

That is the gap. Not talent. Direction.

If your staff is already posting, the question is not whether they can film. It is whether you would stand behind what goes up.

Most small business owners already have these 3 free tools. Almost none have them set up properly.

In this quick reel, I walk through the three I set up first for every client:

📍 Google Business Profile: how people find you on Maps and in local search
📊 Google Analytics: who’s visiting your website and what they do once they’re there
🔎 Google Search Console: what people type into Google to find you, and what’s holding your site back

Set up right, these show you where your customers come from and where you’re losing them. Then you can make decisions based on real numbers instead of guesses.

They’re free and only a few clicks away.

Know a business owner who’s running on guesswork? Send this to them.

This week, High River looks up. 🎈

The Heritage Inn International Hot Air Balloon Festival runs September 23 to 27, and it runs on people who keep showing up: pilots, volunteers, neighbours standing in a field at sunrise. Bring someone, or meet someone, and look up together. It’s free.

Small towns run on recognition. People buy from who they know.

That’s the idea behind our new Storytelling with AI at Flicks: custom animated characters for local businesses, so people remember your business before they ever walk in.

😂(Yes, that’s my character in the balloon.)

If you own a local business, I’d love to sit down with you, take a look at what you’re currently doing marketing-wise, and share what I think could help. No commitment — just a conversation. Send me a message.
