Whistler. Not every day is powder and unicorns. 😄. This is my Scottish smily face ... I'm as happy as a deep friend Mars bar on the inside, deep deep inside!

Flat light, wet snow, zero visibility above the treeline. Still out there. Still smiling.

Because a bad day on the mountain beats a good day almost anywhere else ... unless you live on top of a ski hill and the office is at the bottom & doesn't open until noon!

My memories from this hike; accompanied by two Danes, one of whom I worked with at Panorama Ski School | Spectacular views | Crossing wee streams and resting beside a not so wee water fall | My knees deciding they had enough on the way down so they took a “hydration break” without telling the rest of my body and I ate dirt | one of my passengers whacking their head off the truck ceiling when I hit a drainage ditch with a wee tad too much gusto … interesting what things you remember and as I get older I am able to recall minute details about trips from many years ago but I have no idea wha I intended to be at the grocery store today ❤️

From doodle on the screen to sawdust on the floor.
Quick run-through of how these ski trail signs go from a rough layout, into a 3D render, through VCarve and the end mill, then it’s the usual suspects: sanding, paint, hardware, clear coat, pack, ship, hope I didn’t miss a step and that I remembered to eat somewhere in there.

Edinburgh. Late 1980s. My bedroom wall told you everything you needed to know about where my head was at. 🎿 Marc Girardelli bottom right, Harti Weirather in he middle ... Ingemar Stenmark (my idol) was on the wall at the end of the bed so his ski stance was the first thing I would see when I woke every morning.

K2. Salomon. Piste maps. Ski magazine clippings. Every penny of my newspaper round went on skiing.

Thirty years later I build signs for people whose walls still look a bit like this — just with better craftsmanship than Blu-Tack. 😄

MIA. It starts young. 🏔️

Multi-tasking once again; my Canadian side is working like a busy bee on several sign orders whereas my Tartan army side is watching / listening to the footie in the background

If you know, you know. 😏

Grey Zone, Blackcomb. A short ski & traverse from the top of Glacier Chair & a wee hike from the actual ski run and suddenly you're here — fresh snow, no crowds, just the mountain doing its thing. Be prepared to break track! Great spot for a quick refreshment of the liquid courage variety at the top before maiking fresh tracks.

BC has no shortage of places like this. You just have to be willing to earn them. 🎿

Val d'Isère. Early 90s. University ski club. The jackets were loud, the budget was non-existent, and the skiing was everything. 🎿. Giving my best Degree 7 pastel ski jacket ... can you guess I like purple ?!

It's a contest between whether I've had more ski jackets or boots ... and with my fussy feet I think the ski boots win that one! The mountains got into the blood and never left.

Thirty years later I'm still at it — just making signs in a BC workshop for people who feel the same way about their mountains.

MIA. Always. 🏔️

Multi tasking: paint drying on this one while the CNC churns away in the background flattening the blank for another sign and meanwhile I’m working on some new product designs. Now if only I could teach my cat to operate the 3D printer and run the CNC I could go ride my bike

Here’s a few renders of various signs and decor pieces that now they’ve been approved I need to proceed to the making sawdust part. The render approval part is super important to avoid design mistakes and using the latest carving software and other other apps like Canva I am able to create a pretty good likeness of the end result. I’ll be starting when I wake on a number of various signs for a cottage resort in Ontario but also have many ski trail insured signs to work on too. Going to be a busy week so just as well I have lots of coffee pods at the ready

Quick one for a Sunday — what's the name of your favourite trail, cabin, lake, or stretch of road? Could be back home or somewhere you visited once and never forgot. Drop it in the comments. Always curious what names people carry around with them.

The one up top was made for someone's kid — a memory that means something to their family.
