12 Days of Christmas - Day 9

I had a call from a really close friend last week. She asked if I could bring her some “Bench in Blue” cards, explaining she was helping her cousin with something truly special. He’d received heartbreaking news that his time here was limited, and he was writing personal notes to his loved ones with her help.

As they browsed through our website, he saw the image and instantly stopped. “That’s the one,” he’d said. “I can see myself sitting there, and I hope my family and friends will think of me when they see it.”

I dropped the cards off personally, and when I met her cousin, his kindness and gratitude radiated. His hug was heartfelt and unforgettable. I am honoured that this image resonated with him and have so much love for my friend for this kind act❤️

12 Days of Christmas: Day 7

On a crisp winter morning, I found myself in the perfect setting - snow, falling gently, the world wrapped in a soft, white blanket. Family friends spent the morning outside, bundled up in scarves and mittens, building a snowman with such care and creativity. When I arrived with my camera, I could see their joy reflected in the snowman’s broad smile. There was something extra special about the way they had crafted him – coal eyes that sparkled, a carrot nose perfectly in place, and a scarf tied neatly around his neck. As I framed the shot, I realized why snowmen are so important. They’re more than just snow and decorations, they’re symbols of togetherness, creativity, and the simple joys of winter. A snowman brings people together, reminding us to embrace the moment and the happiness I can bring. Capturing that moment, felt like capturing a piece of pure, unfiltered joy.

12 Days of Christmas: Day 6

The sky was clear and sharp, the kind of blue you only get on cold mornings. The sun hung low, a bright contrast to the dark, snow-covered pines in the foreground with the vast Monashee Mountain range in the distance. Below, the valley was hidden under a thick layer of clouds, looking like a massive, untouched snowfield. There wasn’t much sound - just the wind cutting through the trees. I like this photo because it’s simple. No dramatic colors or overwhelming details, just the starkness of light and shadow. Sometimes, that’s all you need to tell a story.

12 Days of Christmas - Day 5

There’s a neighborhood in my city that feels timeless – tree-lined streets, picket fences, and homes with welcoming front porches. At Christmas, this charm peaks.

One house especially caught my eye, glowing with lights and garlands. The warm windows made me imagine a family inside, sharing laughter, treats, and good company.

It reminded me that a home is more than four walls. It’s pride, connection, and the simple joys of belonging.

12 Days of Christmas - Day 4

While traveling back roads in winter, a large dog noticed my passing vehicle and gave chase. This often happens, and the dogs usually give up after a few hundred feet. I continued driving, keeping an eye out for interesting scenery, when I spotted a beautiful stand of aspen trees. Their white bark stood in stunning contrast against a perfect blue sky—definitely worth a closer look.

I pulled over, grabbed my gear, and started exploring the scene. Guilty as always of losing awareness when looking through my camera, I was completely absorbed. Imagine my surprise when I lowered the camera and saw the dog I had left far behind now approaching... less than 10 feet away.

Startled at first, I quickly noticed his body language: not threatening, but the opposite. His whole lower body wagged with enthusiasm, and his mouth stretched into what I can only describe as a smile. He leaned against my leg to help me give him a good scratch, then flopped onto his back in the snow, clearly requesting a belly rub.
We spent a few minutes together—an unexpected but wonderful encounter that warmed the cold winter day.
Sometimes, the best moments aren’t the ones you plan.

12 Days of Christmas: Day 3

This one’s an oldie but a goodie.

Usually, Glen’s focus is landscapes. He and Mother Nature collaborate combining light and shadow. Obviously you can’t have one without the other but sometimes you just want to have fun and you need to enlist some recruits.

We wanted a fun image with a winter theme so we headed out into the snow at Big White and dragged our son, The Athans Boys and their dad Olympian Gary, along for the shoot. The Athans have been family friends for years and are always up for laughter and adventure. Gary was a great sport climbing up the slope (no small feat in ski boots never mind the Santa suit), fly over the jump while Glen took photos. The kids would throw snow at just the right moment to replicate the spray of powder. Afterwards we relaxed with a fire and hot chocolate and cookies provided by the moms.

There are some people in life that make you laugh a little louder, smile a little bigger and live a little better.

12 Days of Christmas: Day 2

There’s something about an outdoor rink in winter—a place where people of all ages come together. One afternoon, I watched a group play a lively game of shinny, their laughter and shouts echoing in the crisp air. Kids raced across the ice while adults joined in, no one keeping score, just enjoying the moment.

I’ve always admired how rinks like this bring people together. It’s not about winning; it’s about the tradition, the energy, and the shared joy of being outside during the holidays. That’s what I wanted to capture in this shot.

12 Days of Christmas: Day 1

Driving home one winter afternoon, I caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of my eye—a small brook framed by snow, with the light hitting it just right. The colors were incredible, and I knew I couldn’t let it pass. I pulled over, looped back, and grabbed my camera.

The scene was perfect: the soft flow of water against the stark winter landscape, glowing with the last light of the day. I framed the shot and captured what I later called Winter Brook. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best moments are the ones you almost miss.

Here is a story about one of my photographs I call "Meandering"

Exploring back roads is not only enjoyable, but an essential part of my photographic process. It’s rare to find beauty in the areas beside busy highways and freeways. Not only is there more chance of seeing the natural world, but you can travel at lower speeds to scan more effectively and safely. This fall morning. I left home before it was light as I knew the agricultural area I wanted to explore, was about two hours away, and I wanted to catch the early light. I came across the spot at the bottom of the depression in a small valley created by a flowing stream. The green of the mossy ground cover contrasting with the golden and copper hues of the foliage.I liked how the ethereal mist in the middle distance blurred and made mysterious the background.

My advice is to look for the back roads on your next trip. You likely won’t be disappointed.

We were able to spend a few weeks in the desert recently and we felt pretty fortunate to skip out on winter. These trees are in the parking area for a community outdoor pool. Nice.

If you like the notion of pristine beaches, crystal clear water and the friendliest people, you'll love New Zealand. This is Matapuri beach which has all of the above, plus a corner store that makes a wicked good cup of coffee.

I often spend time in farm country when I am photographing. One of the things I love is the produce and eggs sold at the roadside on the honor system. I always leave some money in the ashtray of my vehicle just in case. This particular stand had a trailer of pumpkins of all sizes for $1 each. I picked out a few, put some money in the bucket and took a few photos of this handsome vintage tractor parked just behind. Best $7 I ever spent.
