Retired Major General Walter Holmes has released his memoir, "A Regimental Soldier’s ‘No Life Like It’", written primarily to share his authentic military experiences with his family. Spanning 56 years of uniformed service - including 21 relocations - Holmes’s career progressed from the Army Cadets at age 13 to senior military leadership.
The memoir offers an unvarnished look at regimental life, leadership lessons, and influential mentors, moving past romanticized recruiting slogans. Following his 2002 retirement, Holmes settled in Kingston, Ontario, where he spent another decade as a defense and security consultant, including advising former Soviet nations on NATO integration. He remains active in his local community, church, and military associations.
Published independently without commercial motives, the memoir serves as a personal legacy for his family and a reminder to veterans to record their life stories before they are lost.
