The 3-Second Rule: designing billboards that actually work 🎯
Most drivers make a split-second decision about whether to read a billboard. Here's the truth: if your message can't be absorbed in 3 seconds at 60 km/h, it's not working.
The best billboard designs follow these rules:
✅ 7 words or fewer for the headline
✅ One dominant visual element — not five
✅ High contrast between text and background (think black on yellow, white on dark blue)
✅ Font size that's readable from 50+ metres
✅ A single, clear call-to-action
The biggest mistake we see? Treating a billboard like a flyer or social media graphic. Billboards aren't meant to explain, they're meant to intrigue, direct, and brand.
At Go West Billboards, clients get creative guidance as part of the process. We've seen what works on Lethbridge roads, and we'll help you nail it.
Oh, and it's great your ad is up for 8 seconds 😁
