Ontario Transport Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria says the federal government gave in to "fringe groups" by rejecting Toronto's Billy Bishop Airport jet expansion. Ontario is now reconsidering its support for the Alto high-speed rail project after Ottawa backed away from months of discussions linking support for both projects. The federal government cited public opposition and safety concerns, while Ontario argues the decision could hurt future infrastructure projects.

Ford criticizes U.S. wildfire blame as Ontario battles fires

Ontario Premier Doug Ford criticized U.S. politicians blaming Canada for wildfire smoke, saying neighbours should support each other instead. He pointed to Ontario’s past help sending water bombers to fight fires in California.

Ontario currently has 191 active wildfires, with 73 not under control. The largest fire, Thunder Bay 36, has burned nearly 319,000 hectares, with 155 crews and about 80 water bombers working to contain it.

More than a dozen communities have faced evacuation orders, including Namaygoosagagun First Nation, which was destroyed by fire earlier this week.

First Nations leaders and opposition politicians have criticized Ontario’s wildfire response, calling for more funding and better prevention measures.

Ford’s comments came after U.S. President Donald Trump and some Republican lawmakers criticized Canada over wildfire smoke affecting American cities. Ford called the criticism “absolutely unacceptable” and said Canada would help the U.S. if roles were reversed.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have proposed the Northern Shield Energy Corridor, a new 3,300-km oil pipeline that would transport crude oil from Hardisty, Alberta, to Sarnia, Ontario.

The pipeline would:

Carry 500,000 barrels of oil per day, with the ability to expand to 800,000 barrels daily.
Stay entirely within Canada and be built using Canadian steel.
Improve Canada's energy security, reduce reliance on foreign markets, create jobs, and expand export opportunities.
Potentially be extended to ports, including the Port of Churchill in Manitoba, to access additional markets.

Both premiers say the project will strengthen the Canadian economy, support workers, and ensure more Canadian energy reaches domestic and international markets.
